I have chosen Bachelor of Arts in General Studies with a concentration in Child and Adolescent Development. As I am currently a teaching assistant in Oklahoma, I will apply my degree and concentration to the state’s alternative pathway to a teaching certificate. I need to complete the degree and pass the state teaching exams to become a certified teacher. My chosen concentration will assist me in the field of education by giving me a foundation of knowledge about children and adolescents in varying stages of development. This will help me to meet challenges I may face with unruly students, students from traumatic backgrounds, differing backgrounds, and stages of development. I currently have 13.33 credits transferred from one prior institution and more are pending from another institution. I am unsure of the number of credits or which courses they will correlate to at this time. With only my current credits and classes applied, I need 106.76 more credits. This is approximately 17 terms. As I am still awaiting decision on pending credits, for this paper I will concentrate on the courses I need for my concentration and another that I feel will be helpful in my future career as a teacher. For my future classes within my chosen concentration, I will take PSY211 - Lifespan Development, which will cover basic concepts and research methodologies It will also cover the patterns of human development, including biological, cognitive, and social-emotional development, while including environmental and genetic factors, culture, and history. PSY314 Disorders of Childhood and Adolescence will focus on disorders of childhood and adolescence and the treatments available. Using case studies, I will learn the etiology and manifestation, along with the impact these disorders have on the families. PSY321 - Child Development will

3 focus on infancy through late childhood, while PSY322 - Adolescent Development will focus on the adolescent stage, including cultural and historical issues. Outside of the general education requirements and chosen concentration, I plan to take IDS400 – Diversity in which I will broaden my understanding of cultural differences and crosscultural interactions by analyzing socio-economics, and “Intercultural competence, a lifelong learning process, is introduced as a crucial skill set and benefit to the individual, interpersonal relationships, organizations, and society. Analyzing the role of culture in today's world, developing culturally responsive practices, and understanding the benefits and challenges of diversity will be emphasized.” (SNHU, 2020) I feel this course will be greatly beneficial to teaching in today’s climate.
