Description

5-2 Short Answer: Skills in the Humanities

The work above is James Rosenquist’s “President Elect,” which shows former President John F. Kennedy’s smiling face, hands holding a slice of cake, and a portion of a yellow Chevrolet. It’s a photo-realistic art piece that makes use of cut-out images made to fit a monumental scale to exemplify the juxtaposition in his art. Rosenquist was fascinated with the imagery of advertising and the popularization of significant figures, political and cultural, in mass media (TheArtStory, 2021). This work was considered the artist’s breakthrough work

This art was created during 1960-61; it was included in practically every group exhibition in New York. It was a way for Rosenquist to showcase his art techniques of combining political and social commentary with surreal and collage-like art. This work was ultimately one of the artworks that established Pop Art as a movement in the 1960 (TheArtStory, 2021). According to Bancroft, as a critical player in the Pop Art movement, Rosenquist was wellknown for his massive collage paintings that overwhelmed the audience with seemingly

unrelated images of products or celebrities that hint at their societal concerns (2021). Considering that Rosenquist produces artwork intending to address, persuade, and advocate for particular social issues, “President Elect” was essentially something that asked, “Here is this guy that wants to run for the presidency in the United States -what’s he offering us?” In the end, for six decades, James Rosenquist’s massive and provocative paintings continued to be relevant and engaging in the realm of political, economic, scientific, and environmental issues.
