7-2 Discussion: Implementing Multiple Revision Strategies

The first step in my revision process for my critical analysis essay of David Sedaris’s Me Talk Pretty One Day will be to let my essay rest for 2-3 days. During this time, I will not look at or read over my essay. It is important that I allow myself time away from my critical analysis essay to truly look at it with fresh eyes. I will be rereading my draft essay as a hard copy to help find any mistakes. Once I look at my essay after the resting period I believe I will be able to see the paper in a new light. I believe I will more easily find any sentence structure or grammatical errors that I could be missing at this time. Step two in my revision process will be to read my essay out loud to myself. When I am writing – whether it is an email to a client or an essay for school – I tend to read over my work out loud. It helps me keep my thoughts on the right track as well as help point out any errors in syntax. I think this will help me be able to update my notes and quickly make minor changes to my paper. I will also use this revision process to listen for any changes in subject-verb agreement that needs to be made to my essay. The final step in my revision process will be to have both my boyfriend and my employer read over my paper for a peer review. Once I have completed phases one and two I believe having two people in different careers read my essay will be beneficial to my essay as well as myself. I trust both people to give me a review that is valuable and not worry about hurting my feelings as I know they will come from a place of love and guidance. I’ve chosen both people in order to get two varying critiques for my essay. Neither of them has read David Sedaris’s Me Talk Pretty One Day and I think this will benefit my essay since neither party has prior knowledge of the original work. I believe this will be the most

important revision for my essay since this will be the audience that I am truly targeting for my critical analysis....
