PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Binds to beta2 adrenergic receptors in airway smooth muscle which results in decreased intracellular calcium and relaxes the muscles.
Therapeutic Use Bronchdilation
Complications nervousness, restlessness, tremor, headache, insomnia, paradoxial bronchospasm, chest pain, palpitations, angina, arrythmia, hypertension, nausea, vomiting, hyperglycemia, hypocalemia
Contraindications/Precautions - Allergy to medication - cardiac disease - hypertension - Hyperthyroidism - Glaucoma - Diabetes
Interactions - andrenergic agents - MAO inhibitors - Beta blockers - Digoxin - tricyclic antidepressants - K+ loosing diuretics
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness - Prevention of bronchospasm - Relief of bronchaspasm

Medication Administration Dosage - Inhalation 2 times every 4-6 hours - 1-2 inhalations 15 minutes before exercise - Asthma attack 4-8 puffs q20 minutes for up to 4 hours, then 1-4 hours PRN
Nursing Interventions - Assess lung sounds, pulse and BP before administration - Monitor pulmonary function before administration and periodically through out - Observe for paradoxical bronchospasm - Monitor serum K+ with high dose nebulizer
Client Education - Take as directed - Contact provider if shortness of breath does not subside\ - Dispense on short ihalation and hold for 10 seconds - Patient must prime dispenser before initial use with 4 sprays - Patient must notify provider of all other medications
