Description

Anatomy of the ear: quiz 1 study guide 1. Two systems: Peripheral system and central system 2. Inner ear is embedded behind temporal bone 3. Cochlea is much more medial 4. Tympanic membrane: part of middle ear 5. Pinna: made entirely of cartilage and covered in skin 6. Wax is not always a bad thing; collects debris -Sebaceous glands produce wax -Oseocartlagious conjunction 7. Malleus connects to tympanic membrane 8. Stapes connects to oval window 9. What you’ll see looking into someones ear: -Annular ligament holds tympanic membrane in place; -Pars tensa: tense portion of structure; more inferior area; more of membrane itself; entire -tympanic membrane; tight for vibration -Pars Flaccida: more flaccid; tissue that membrane is made of -Manubrium of malleus (handle): lower portion of malleus that you can see when looking into ear canal; -Umbo: center of tympanic membrane; end of handle -Long process of Incus: extension coming off incus -Light reflex: reflection from malleus; anterior inferior area

10. Lenticular process: where stapes connects 11. Footplate connects ti oval window, generates sound 12. Stapes is most fragile; breaks easily and can break in hard impacts causing hearing loss -Can replace with prosthetic 13.. Superior lig, posterior lig, and anterior lig of malleus all hold it in place;

14. Stapedius muscle connects to neck of stapes; tensor tympani muscle connects to malleus -runs through middle ear and holds tympanic membrane inward and stiffens 15. Stapedial muscle is strongest and important in how it responds to loud sounds; contracts in response of loud sounds; temporarily protects hearing; can fatigue and then protection decreases 16. Important in keeping balance of pressure inside and outside of ear; Most of the time tube is close but you open when you swallow or pop it -Does not contribute to transmission of sound; while effect perception of sound 17. Eustachian tube is more horizontal in children and that causes the infections...
