Safety of Space Travel and Exploration

This journal article by former astronaut Mark Kelly talks about SpaceX and the risks and rewards of space travel. The purpose of the article is to inform the reader how space travel is difficult and risky, but well worth it. The source is credible because it was written by a former astronaut who worked for NASA, and was originally published in the USA Today. I might use a few facts listed from this source in my research paper.

Kelly, M. (2016, October 3). Humanity can't afford failure in space travel. USA Today, p. 07A. Retrieved from http://link.galegroup.com.indianapolis.libproxy.ivytech.edu/apps/doc/A465466301/GPS? u=imcpl_indy&sid=GPS&xid=307e2bd5

This article discusses the difficulty of getting proper nutrition while traveling in spaceships for long periods of time. It lists dietary plans for astronauts to follow to maintain good health. The authors seem to be directing this article towards people wanting more information specifically about lack of nutrition in astronauts. The source is credible but a little bit outdated. I will use the information in this article to prove my point about space travel being unsafe by listing the health risks associated with insufficient nutrition during space travel.

It talks about and explains the reasoning behind different flashes of light observed in space. The source is directed towards individuals conducting research on this topic. The source is credible but also somewhat outdated. I will use this source to explain how the flashes of light talked about in the article can blind and create hazards for astronauts. Sannita, W. G., Narici, L., & Picozza, P. (2006). Positive visual phenomena in space: A scientific case and a safety issue in space travel. Vision Research, 46(14), 2159-2165.

It lists risks and has evidence towards and against cardiovascular issues caused by space travel. The source is credible since it is was written by an expert in the field. I will use this source to suggest possible cardiovascular problems for my argument that space travel is unsafe. Convertino, V. A. (2009). Status of cardiovascular issues related to space flight: Implications for future research directions. Respiratory Physiology & Neurobiology, 169S34-S37.

The article is maybe targeting people researching or working in a field where space safety standards and learning about new space technology is relevant. The source is credible since it was written by an expert in the field. I will use this source to talk about the safety standards and use the development of new commercially built space vehicles to prove that space travel is becoming more dangerous. Morring, F. J. (2013). Getting organized.(safety standard concern for space travel). Aviation Week & Space Technology, (6).

According to the article, the government is having a hard time keeping astronauts safe. The source is credible since the author used real sources in his writing and backed up his facts with credible sources. I will use this article to prove my point about space travel being unsafe by using statements in this article about space travel causing nutritional issues, radiation problems, and increased risk of other sickness.

The purpose of the interview was to present this information and get insight from a former astronaut about the mistakes NASA made. The source is credible since it was a real interview of an event that actually happened. However, in my paper I will use the interviewee’s opinion to support my argument rather than facts and data gathered in my other sources. N.A. (n.d). NASA made shuttle errors. Herald Sun (Melbourne), http://link.galegroup.com.indianapolis.libproxy.ivytech.edu/apps/doc/A435376773/OVIC? u=imcpl45550&sid=OVIC&xid=27b4fa57 This is a newspaper article that interviews multiple astronauts about the dangers of space travel. The purpose is to provide astronaut’s opinions about the matter to the general public. The source is credible since the author interviewed multiple people who had prior experience in space travel. I will use this article to support opinions in my argument about space travel being unsafe and dangerous. Former astronauts reflect on danger of space travel. It claims that some people state that private space shuttles are safer to use than

public ones, but proves that both are just as dangerous by listing numbers of recent space crashes. The source is credible because it lists all real accidents and makes a reasonable claim based on that. I can use the accidents it listed to prove points about space travel being dangerous. (n.d). Accidents highlight limits of human space travel. USA Today. http://indianapolis.libproxy.ivytech.edu/login?url=https://search-ebscohostcom.indianapolis.libproxy.ivytech.edu/login.aspx? direct=true&db=n5h&AN=J0E371312504614&site=eds-live This source talks about changes in heartbeat rhythm while in space versus on earth. It goes in depth about the differences in each. The source is credible since it uses different reliable data for its claims. The article was also written recently. I would include the information in this article to discuss the health problems of space travel and group it together with other health information gathered from my other sources. Otsuka, K., Izumi, R., Ishioka, N., Ohshima, H., & Mukai, C. (2009). Chronomics of heart rate variability on earth and in space.
