Sleep problems can occur at any age but primarily in children and young adults. In this source, children who have technology in their room such as computers and smartphones, harm their sleeping time and wake up patterns. The parents were asked for bed time and wake up time of their children during weekdays and weekends. It shows that most of the children sleep longer on weekends than weekdays but their wake-up time was crucially delayed on weekends. Children tend to use their technology at night by playing games, watching movies in weekends and sleeping late.

Bedtime mobile use was associated with sleep disturbance, poor sleep quality. Smartphones seems to have an effect on sleep quality and disturbance in many ways, which can lead to tiredness, depression and dysfunction. Smartphones has shown correlation with psychological health in children’s, teens, and young adult. On the other hand, young adults with the highest social media engagement were at significantly greater risk for depression.

Tweeting, not sleeping? What is your social media/sleep balance? Breus, M (2016) https://www.huffpost.com/entry/tweeting-not-sleeping-what-is-your-social-mediasleepbalance_b_9103468 Individual who uses social media heavenly have significantly more disturbance during sleep than those that use it light or none at all. It claims that 25% of users actually had twice as many sleep disturbances than the lowest 25% of users. It shows that young adults who check social media sites during typical sleeping hours are likely to keep their phones or mobile devices near their beds and are more likely to use them while in bed. This source support that sleeps deprivation and daytime tiredness have a strong correlation. These effects play a big role on people who check social media during sleep hours.

Hershner S and Chervin R (2014, March 1) Causes and consequence of sleepiness among college students. https://www.dovepress.com/causes-and-consequences-of-sleepiness-among collegestudents-peer-reviewed-fulltext-article-NSS

This article claims that over half of college students report daytime sleepiness and over 70% claim they do not get enough amount of sleep. It shows that social media is the latest reason of sleep deprivation in college students. This resulting in a number of problem areas of the students such as lower grade, risk of academic failure, and compromised learning. The article shows that the use of smartphones around bedtime result in difficulty falling sleep, waking up throughout the night and waking up early. This article helps me understand more about sleep deprivation. I realize leaving your phone beside you during bed time can play a part in sleep deprivation because many of our social media apps will notify us when someone message or post something. The sounds of notification can cause one to wake up during the night.

Larry Rosen (2015, August 31) Relax and turn off your phone and go to sleep. https://hbr.org/2015/08/research-shows-how-anxiety-and-technology-are-affecting-oursleep

This article mainly talks about how technology interferes with sleep and how can we fix it. This article will be part of my conclusion as this strongly connects with the research done on how smartphones, social media technology negative impact to many young adults. This article gives some good examples and recommendations on how we can reduce the impact of screens on sleep and it contains on how most of us should avoid distractions before bedtime. “Our devices are a gift that connects us to so many people and so much information, but they do not have to frighten us and disrupt our allimportant sleep”.
