Essay Question: (3) Does social media increase or decrease the hyperreal nature of the contemporary world? Discuss with reference to one social media platform. Thesis Statement: This essay will demonstrate how the social media platform ‘Facebook’ effects individuals in the contemporary world. It is hypothesised that the hyperreal nature of social media will have a negative impact on the mental health of individuals.

This article reveals how individuals are exposed to the public through the simulation of social media that eventually forms a hyperreality. This text uses an example of hyperreality called ‘Foodstagramming’ which is uploading your food onto social media to represent social status and gain prestige. This text will help strengthen my argument as it proves how using social media platforms can increase the hyperreal nature for young people in the contemporary world. This article will be used in my final essay as it is a great example of how young individuals are caught up in their own hyperreality, where they forget what life was like before the prevalence of social media. Source 2 Frost, R., Rickwood, D., 2017, ‘A systematic review of the mental health outcomes associated with Facebook’, Journal of Computers in Human Behaviour, vol. 76, pp. 576-600. doi: 10.1016/j.chb.2017.08.001. This article explores the hyperreal nature and severe impacts that social networking sites have on the mental health of individuals in relation to Facebook. Statistics reveal that Facebook use is associated with key mental health domains, ‘addiction, anxiety, depression, body image and disordered eating, alcohol use, and mental health problems’. This article will be embedded into my argument as it reflects the unsafe and toxic trends of social media, creating a hyperreality for young people. This will also prove my thesis as it discusses the harmful aspects of social media and how it damages individual’s mental health.

This article suggests the harmful and beneficial aspects of social media usage amongst adolescents on Facebook. The extent of this text articulates how social media encourages positive connections and increases young people’s self-esteem. It also provides contradictory evidence, explaining how Facebook is detrimental to the psychological and emotional wellbeing of young people due to excessive use online, causing poor mental health issues. This article will be used to strengthen my argument and will focus on how social media has created a toxic hyperreality for young people in the contemporary world. Source 4 Naezer, M., 2018, ‘From risky behaviour to sexy adventures: reconceptualising young people’s online sexual activities’, Journal of Culture, Health and Sexuality, vol. 20, no. 6, pp. 715-729. doi: 10.1080/13691058.2017.1372632. This article emphasises how the popularity of social media is increasing the risks of young people’s ‘sexual’ activities online, creating a hyperreality for adolescents. This text uses the example of sexually explicit materials, such as pornography, as a hyperreality for some individuals. This causes many troubling effects on young people, particularly women due to the depiction of male dominance portrayed in pornography, as well as the false representation of what real sex is like. Altogether, this proves my thesis as social media has increased the hyperreal nature in the contemporary world. 1 https://web.stanford.edu/class/history34q/readings/Baudrillard/Baudrillard_Simulacra.html https://medium.com/@brettwilliamsmulligan/social-media-and-baudrillards-simulationand-simulacra-a1adae355dc1#:~:text=This%20is%20important%20because%20it,are%20so %20blurred%20that%20it's https://buchtelite.com/18294/opinion/negative-impacts-of-photoshop/ 2 https://www.esafety.gov.au/about-us/tech-trends-and-challenges/harmful-sexualbehaviours-under-18
