Bhandari, S. (2018, May 20). Causes of Mental Illness. Retrieved from https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/mental-health-causes-mental-illness#1 Smitha Bhandari takes a deeper look at the causes of Mental Illness and how it impacts a human brain. According to Smitha's research, a large number of cases of mental illness are caused by biological, mental, and environmental factors. Genetics, infections, prenatal damage, or any sort of injuries are key factors involving mental illness. A dysfunctional family life, death of a loved one, or even constantly being judged by the society can trigger mental illness. The article was very well written and formatted with multiple bullets points making it easy to follow. It is beneficial to my research project as it only focused on the factors of mental illness. Mental illnesses mount on campus: new study says students experience a high rate of mental illness. (2004, October). University Business, 7(10), 24. Retrieved from https://link-galecom.ezproxy.library.yorku.ca/apps/doc/A123323564/AONE? u=yorku_main&sid=AONE&xid=e5725900 University Business released a statistics article in 2004 on students experiencing mental illness on campus. According to the article, 50% of the students rate their mental illness knowledge poor while 25% of the students are referring to education for their lack of knowledge. The study also stated that 46% would go seek parents' advice while approximately 23% of students will visit a counselor. Moreover, the culture and atmosphere around the campus play a vital role in a student’s life. Lack of knowledge on and not know how to cope with mental illness can negatively impact student’s education. Colleges need to improve their awareness of mental illness in order the bring down the numbers. The article was very well written with quite a few visuals to support it. These stats are important for my project as it gave me an understanding of how much effect it can have on a student’s campus life.

Hasson-Ohayon, I., Levy, I., Kravetz, S., Vollanski-Narkis, A., & Roe, D. (2011). Insight into mental illness, self-stigma, and the family burden of parents of persons with a severe mental illness. Comprehensive Psychiatry, 52(1), 75–80. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.comppsych.2010.04.008 The author’s in this article specifically focuses on the parents and how they feel when their child is experiencing mental illness. The article mentions about a test that was conducted on approximately 130 parents and whether self-stigma plays a role or not. Self-stigma is a disguised disgrace that consumes our confidence and self-adequacy. While the article also talks about how parents worry about their loved ones' concern, it also leads them to anger and anxiety. Many of the family members talked about how important it is for them to talk about mental illness to their son or daughter. The parent’s burden assessment contained information about how often their son/daughter expressed about mental illness and whether or not they experienced any negative feelings. The overall quality the article wasn’t as good as I expected as it contained lots and lots of in-text citations making it hard to follow.

Kesley (2020, April 30). Let's talk about our hard times...it's healing. Retrieved from https://www.time-to-change.org.uk/blog/lets-talk-about-our-hard-times-its-healing This source is a personal story of a girl named Kesley who talks about one of the symptons of mental illness, depression.
