Patients who must go to the hospital are often nervous, scared, and do not know what the outcomes will be. Patients that go into Mayo Clinic often are going because they have the toughest medical problems, which may mean that they are going to feel ten times the nervousness and being scared. Mayo’s atrium Healthscape may put that at ease. It does not look like your typical lobby of a hospital. It is bright, open, and a place that is warm and welcoming. Having a positive open place for people to gather and talk is a great way to market the atrium. People travel from all over the world to go to the Mayo clinic, they treat people who have different cancers, cardiology and heart conditions, neurology, pulmonology, and they have an advanced neurosurgical center. Having the atrium helps ease the minds of their patients and their families. “Until 1975, in healthcare advertising and promotion really did not exist.” (Berkowitz, 2017, pg. 5) With that being said, since the Mayo Clinic’s inception, it was always advertising. “Mayo Clinic was the first hospital to maintain standardized information on its patients, yes, they were all on paper, however, all the patients carried their records with them, in order for other doctors, could see what they were being treated for and their medications.” (Wharton University, n.d.) This is what I would consider word of mouth, and that is the best advertising, people who have been there and shared their experiences. That is what the Atrium does, it allows patients to congregate in the Atrium, they get to listen to the old couple who plays the piano, to give some joy and happiness to them and their families. It allows marketing with social media, and people like Sharon Turner, who did an interview with her daughter, Jodi Hume, about the joy of the atrium, and watching that couple. Sharon shared her battle with cancer tumors and losing part of her jaw, and then being treated at the Mayo Clinic and the good outcomes of a prosthetic jaw. Now she (Sharon) can eat corn on

the cob, and sandwiches, something that she couldn’t have done without the help of her doctors at the Mayo Clinic. The Atrium helps to provide hope to those who are there for care. This is part of the Mayo Clinic’s mission, which is inspiring hope and promoting health through integrating clinical practice, education and research.” (Mayo Clinic, 1998-2021) The Atrium aligns with the goals of the Mayo Clinic also, creating a caring environment, to all the people that come there for care, no matter of their affiliation, creed, or religion. Every patient is treated as an individual with an individual condition, there can be several patients there, all having bone cancer, but not one person is the same, so they are treated as such. The researchers help come up with a plan of treatment for each patient, which is part of their mission, values and goals, of respecting everyone, having integrity, having compassion, and healing those who come into their care.
