Expected Pharmacological Action Inhibits production of prostaglandins and decreases platelet aggregation
Therapeutic Use Analgesia; reduction of inflammation/fever; decreased clotting (reduction in risk of TIA and MI)
Complications dyspepsia, GI ulcers, bleeding, epigastric distress, nausea, tinnitus
Medication Administration PO: 81-1000g q4-6h, max 4g/day
Contraindications/Precautions hypersensitivity to salicylates, sensitivity to NSAIDs, thrombocytopenia, GI bleed/ulcers, chronic alcohol use, severe hepatic/renal disease
Nursing Interventions monitor skin, gums, etc for bleeding; monitor INR/PT/PTT, watch for tinnitus, assess pain/fever
Interactions inc. bleeding with heparin, warfarin, dipyridamole, ticlopidine, clopidogrel, tirofiban, eptifibatide; Ibuprophen may inhibit/negate antiplatelet effect; inc activity of penicillins; may decrease therapeutic affect of diuretics and ACE-i's
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness pain/fever reduction; TIA avoided; MI avoided
