Expected Pharmacological Action Inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone to its potent metabolite 5 alpha dihydrotestosterone in prostate, liver, and skin; 5 alpha dihydrotestosterone is partially responsible for praostatic hyperplasia and hair loss.

Therapeutic Use Reduce prostate size with associated decrease in urinary synptoms Decrease hair loss, promote hair regrowth.

Complications finasteride can cause: prostate cancer (high grade) angiodema, breast cancer

Medication Administration Do not confuse with Proscar (finasteride) with Prograf (tacrolimus) or Provera PO administer once daily with or without meals.

Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivity Women Use cautiously in: Hepatic impairment Obstructive uropathy

Nursing Interventions Monitor signs of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) such as difficulty starting a urine stream, painful urination, weak urine flow, feeling that the bladder is not completely empty, frequent nighttime urination, and an urge to urinate again soon after urinating.

Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Decrease in urinary symptoms of begnin prostatic hyperplasia Hair regrowth in androgenetic alopecia.
