Expected Pharmacological Action Stimulates a-adrenergic receptors (mostly in blood vessels), minor b-adrenergic activity
Therapeutic Use Increases BP, cardiac output
Complications arrhythmias, bradycardia, hypertension, renal failure, anxiety, tremor
Medication Administration IV: 0.5-1mcg/min, titrate up to 30mcg/min
Contraindications/Precautions thrombosis, hypovolemia hyptotension, concurrent use of MAO inhibitors/tricyclic antidepressants
Nursing Interventions Monitor BP and vitals; ECD monitored continuously; CVP, PAWP/PCWP, CO should be monitored
Interactions Hypertension with MAO-i, doxapram, tricyclic antidepressants, and methyldopa.
