Analysis of the movie "Awakenings"...

Description

The drama movie Awakenings is from 1990, and it is based on the biography “Awakenings” by Oliver Sacks. The movie begins in the 1930's, when Leonard was a boy. He slowly starts detaching with the world, and goes into a sort of catatonic state. Then there is a flash forward to the 1960's about 30 years later. The main character Dr. Sayer is a psychiatrist who starts at the psychotic institution where Leonard lives. Dr. Sayer wants to cure the catatonics. He starts experimenting with a drug mixture, which eventually woke up the catatonic patients, including Leonard. According to the movie “Awakenings” we are to analyse the main character Dr. Sayer. In the movie you follow Dr. Sayers development. In the beginning, you see that Dr. Sayer is at a job interview at the psychotic institution. Dr. Sayer is a very shy man, but evidently also clever and ambitious. In the beginning he didn’t talk to his co-workers, it is obviously that he didn’t had lots of conversations with others because he is introvert and think different than others. At first, he has no experience working with people, so when he found out the job had to do with people, he wasn’t so interested in the job. It is shown at the job interview, when he said there for sure was other who was more dedicated for the job. But he got the job, and in the start, he seems very uncomfortable with the task he got. His passion for the job grows, when he found of that many of the patients have the same disease. Additionally, he feels more comfortable in the job after he starts communicating with his co-worker Eleanor. In his spare time, he studies, he has a lot of plants and books at home that he observes and

undoubtedly, he found it very interesting. We didn’t see any of his friends or family through the whole movie. Dr. Sayer live all by himself with no pets. Firstly, that shows that he is very passionate about scientific. Secondly, it shows loneliness, because he is all by himself and the only thing, he has in his life is his job. Dr. Sayer starts to find the job interesting and he will cure the disease ‘encephalitis’ that the patients have, the other doctors do not agree with his methods at first, but later they accept and found his theory interesting because it effective. Dr. Sayer see symptoms from the Parkinson-disease at his patient Leonard. He improves that L-Dopa medicine works on Leonard. Leonard wakes up from his catatonic state and therefore Leonard and Dr. Sayer spend a lot of time together. Dr. Sayer wants to show things Leonard has missed the 30 years he had been a statue. Thus, Dr. Sayer is forced to be social with the patients. Dr. Sayer takes the patients to a plant-exhibition, the patients doesn't think the exhibition is interesting, but it is Dr. Sayers favourite place to go to. That is presumably because he is not used to be around people in social contexts, so he doesn't know which activities you do with others. At the end of the movie, you see Dr. Sayers development, it is shown when he looks back at his progress with Leonard and the other clients. He has realized which things that matters in life, “with work, play, friendship, family” - as he said in the last scene of the film “These are the things we’d forgotten.” Eventually he found out that the way he lived his life was not the way he wanted. In the very last scene of the movie, he asks Eleanor out – he doesn't want to waste time. The Film “Awakenings” wants to remind us to live our life, and that we should do what we feel for....
