Description

Manhood Manhood was written by John Main in 1980. It is a short story about a young boy and his father. The father has too much expectation for his son, and he wants him to be a good athlete so that he can be proud of him, all because he did not have the support in his childhood to become an athlete. No one even played with him in his free time, so the only thing he did was always studying so that he could be secure for the future. So, he is expecting his son to do all the things that he could not achieve or experience as a child before it is too late. In, the story we can read that he complains about the things he could not do, because of studying all the time, so that he could be secure in the future. Rob is thirteen but almost fourteen years old, and he is the second most important character in the story. He is not so strong, and he is very thin. He tries to make his father proud in every aspect, as we see at the beginning of the story, where he and Mr. Rob were cycling for a very long distance. He tries to hold on to the place they live, but his strength fails him in the middle of the journey. Mr. Willison is very ambitious. He wants to give his son, Rob, all that he did not have a child, and because he wants to give all that he did not have, he becomes very strict with him. He ends up getting frustrated at the ending of the story because of him getting disappointment. He complains about his height and his physical appearance, and he does not want Rob to be like him. Mr. Willison is the most important person in the story.
