Axes & Planes overview...
Axes and Planes of movement Frontal/ Coronal Plane • Cutting down the head from the front to the back • Movement: Abduction & adduction. Eg. Abduction and adduction of the arms • Occurs around the Sagittal Axis (remember Sagittarius star sign is an arrow through the heart). Sagittal Plane • Cutting in 2, from right to left • Movement: Flexion & Extension Eg. Nodding head or flexion and extension of the arm/knee •
Occurs around the transversal axis
Transverse Plane • Cutting into upper and lower half • Movement: Rotation. Eg. Rotation of the shoulder (lying down) around the longitudinal – external rotation and internal rotation • Rotation occurs around the longitudinal axis Note: The axis is always at a right angle to the plane
MCQ: Someone is doing a cartwheel – what is the axis and the plane that they are doing it in?...
