Biografía Hijo del teniente coronel Juan Manuel Grau Berrío, de ascendencia catalana, y de Luisa Seminario del Castillo, descendiente de antiguas familias de la región, la infancia de Miguel Grau transcurrió en Piura y más tarde en el puerto de Paita, cuando su progenitor fue nombrado vista de aduana. En 1843, siendo todavía un niño, el pequeño Miguel se embarcó en una goleta comandada por Ramón Herrera, gran amigo de su padre, que hacía un viaje de Paita a Panamá. Lamentablemente la goleta naufragó y, a su regreso al hogar, su madre no estaba dispuesta a consentir ya nuevos embarques. Ingresó en el colegio de Nieto, en el cual, según uno de sus biógrafos, Fernando Romero Pintado, "Miguel se torna taciturno. En el colegio está siempre distraído, callado, casi hosco. Merodea por la playa apenas terminan las clases y en los días de vacaciones". Contaba once años cuando doña Luisa, su madre, aceptó que volviera a cruzar los océanos. Recorrió entonces todos los mares y durante nueve años (según el historiador Alberto Tauro del Pino) el joven Grau "surca mares de Asia, Europa y América en diversos transportes y aun en buques balleneros". Al regresar al Perú (1853) se radicó en Lima, donde fue alumno del poeta español Velarde y estudió para ingresar en la Marina. El 14 de marzo de 1854, con diecinueve años, se convirtió en guardiamarina y vistió por primera vez el uniforme que cubriría de gloria. Navegó en los vapores Rímac, Vigilante y Ucayali antes de ser trasladado a la fragata Apurímac, donde sirvió con Lizardo Montero, otro ilustre marino piurano. Cuando prestaba servicio en la Apurímac, el comandante de esta nave apoyó la revolución del general Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco. Tras el fracaso del movimiento, y junto con otros jóvenes oficiales que formaban parte de la tripulación, Miguel Grau fue separado del servicio (1858) y volvió a la marina mercante. De guardiamarina a diputado Llamado nuevamente, regresó a la Marina el 11 de septiembre de 1863, casado ya con Dolores Cavero, quien le dio nueve hijos. Ascendió a teniente segundo y el 4 de diciembre del mismo año a teniente primero, para pasar pocos meses después a capitán de corbeta. Enviado a Europa para traer la corbeta Unión, llegó a Valparaíso en 1865, año en que fue ascendido a capitán de fragata, y desde el puerto chileno apoyó la revolución del coronel Mariano Ignacio Prado.

Siempre al mando de la corbeta Unión, participó en el combate naval de Abtao (7 de febrero de 1866), y siguió hacia el sur hasta los canales de Chile, para esperar las nuevas naves adquiridas en Inglaterra. Cuando Prado, posponiendo a brillantes marinos peruanos, contrató al contralmirante norteamericano John Tucker para comandar la Armada, Grau protestó y presentó su renuncia, actitud que fue considerada como rebeldía. Fue preso en la isla de San Lorenzo y permaneció allí hasta que, después de un largo juicio, salió absuelto. Pasó nuevamente a ejercer su profesión de marino en la actividad privada y tuvo el mando del vapor mercante Puno, propiedad de la Compañía Inglesa. A finales de 1867 regresó a la Marina en calidad de comandante del monitor Huáscar. El 25 de julio del año siguiente fue ascendido a capitán de navío y el 19 de abril de 1873 a capitán de navío efectivo, siendo después, durante siete meses, comandante general de la escuadra de evoluciones. Pasó luego a ocupar el alto cargo de comandante general de la Marina. En 1872, al iniciarse la revolución de los hermanos Gutiérrez, Grau encabezó el pronunciamiento de la Marina en contra de la dictadura. The Huáscar made a number of surprising actions against a so powerful as the Chilean squad in the following months. The glorious Commander Grau died sloughed. The command passed to Elías Aguirre, who also died. Turn corresponded to the first lieutenant Melitón Rodríguez. They were first deposited in the mausoleum of Ramón Castilla in the Presbitero Maestro cemetery. In 1908, they found their final destination in the crypt for the Heroes of the war of the Pacific which built President José Pardo. In 1946 opened the monument and square that bear his name. With the passing of the years Grau, thanks to the work of intellectuals like González Prada, José Gálvez and Jorge Basadre, among many others, became the greatest national heroes figure and symbol of national sacrifice in the war of 79....
