Writing assignment unit 5: Athlete’s Warehouse case study Strengths of Athlete’s warehouse company. Since Colin and Ed had background expertise experiences in the area, they could provide the expert's consultancy to customers regarding the purchase of athletics equipment especially shoes. This capacity gave them an advantage over other competitors. Colin could work full time the management of the shops, while Ed work on the store as the schedule of his job allowed him. Colin had a rigid trust and confidence in the available market. His belief was based on facts and led them forward. The job scope and location they were working before helped them to expertise in their business and know the town of the business. For instance, Colin had initiated tough supplier contact while he was at Ottawa University. Colin was familiar with the selling price of items. Weaknesses of Athlete's warehouse Ed had the fear of losing money that he saved for his retirement. His fear arose from the business plan of Colin, providing quality products for high-quality product users. Colin and Ed were needed to secure unemployment urgently. They had $12,000 and an old cash register from the old Comer brook store. But the had to invest $20,000 in inventory and $10,000 in a renovation. Taking Ed’s 9 years saving of retirement as an investment had worse consequences. They didn’t learn from their experience where the old business closed. They needed to ask why was it closed and analyze the reason to not repeat it.

Opportunities of Athlete’s warehouse They could provide an expert’s assistance to customers regarding the selection of athletes' goods and gears, which the competitors couldn’t provide to their customers. Some of the competitors were not providing a large selection of goods to customers while Athlete’s Warehouse did. The demography of their target market was favorable. 36% of the population found in the age between 15-34. The 15-34 aged of the population would be engaged from school sports activities to adult health exercises. And none of the competitors provided a similar mix to these targeted customers, this was the other opportunity. The location they were working had a low inflation rate. This lower rate enables customers to buy quality products and services as well as to borrow money with a low interesting rate. Threats of Athlete’s warehouse The main threats for Athlete’s warehouses were competition, competitor’s behavior. B & B company was the only provider in the town until 1983 and they had been there around 15 years. For the local persons, it is a habit to buy from a known company. The Shortstop company was a good alternative to the Athlete’s warehouse for customers. Competitors seek to alter their strategy by copying from their successful competitors to keep up their market shares.

The competition with other companies leads to contest for customers. Customers can easily be influenced by the location, price, and services of the companies. According to the Athlete’s warehouse case study: the general SWOT analysis will be explained below. The internal features of the company are expressed in strengths and weaknesses. The internal strengths, in this case, included, their supplier contacts, worked previously in the athletic industry, and they owned a gymnasium. These features were their strengths to enabled them to identify what their customers would need. The internal weaknesses were like, there was no financial base established, investing nine-year saving money for their business, and Ed’s fear of losing his saving money. These were the weakness arose from the internal situation of the company. Opportunities from the external environment were low inflation rate, high consumer demography around their location, and capability to assist with the selection of goods and clothes of Athletes, which the competitors couldn’t do. Threats from the external environment were the experienced and alternative compertitors in the town. These competitors could attract their customers. Generally, an organization needs to lessen its weaknesses and then threats. Having fewer weaknesses give chances to reduce threats. And having more strength helps to attain more opportunities.
