Expected Pharmacological Action Dopamine promotor (increase dopamine levels in the brain, treat Parkinson's disease.
Therapeutic Use Helps in controlling body movements, tremors, shaking.
Complications May cause adverse effects in CNS,
Medication Administration Must be determined by careful titrationin each Pt., Dosage will vary. One example: One 25-100mg tab PO 3x day. (Dosage may be increased with Dr. order only) until reaching desired therapeutic response.
Contraindications/Precautions Consult a Dr before use if pregnant, Pt should only use if prescribed, & use only as prescribed. Do not consume alcohol while on medication. Other adverse reactions reported have been chest pain, cardiac irregularities, hypotension, hypertension, & heart palpations/ rhythm irregularities. Psychotic episodes including delusions & hallucinations have occured.
Nursing Interventions Give tab med with water, with meals or at bedtime. Give at same time ea day. Monitor PT closely during the dose period.
Interactions MAO Inhibitors/ tricyclic antidepressants, iron salts, multivitamins.
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
Do not drink alcohol while on this med.
Unvoluntary body movements are minimized, better controlled, may cease.
