Expected Pharmacological Action Binds to an enzyme on gastric parietal cells in the presence of acidic gastric pH, preventing the final transport of hydrogen ions into the gastric lumen.
Therapeutic Use Antiulcer agents
Complications Side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, headache, weakness C-Diff associated diarrhea, abdominal pain, acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea/vomiting, hypomagnesemia, acute interstitia nephritis, cutaneous lupus erythematosus, itching, rash, B12 deficiency, bone fracture, allergic reactions, systemic lupus erythematosis
Medication Administration adult dose: 20 mg once daily
Contraindications/Precautions Do not use if you have had a history of hypersensitivity to omeprazole or any benzimidazoles; Do not use concurrently with rilpiverine; Use caution if you have conditions of the liver, plan to take this medication in high doses for more than 1 year, and anyone using this drug for a duration greater than 3 years; If pregnant/lactating use only if necessary as there are risks associated; Safety and effectiveness not established in patients less than 1 month of age
Interactions
Nursing Interventions Administer before meals; do not crush or chew; capsules may be opened and sprinkled on applesauce followed by a drink of water
May not be fully effective if combined with other aganets metabolized by CYP450 enzyme system; may raise levels of toxicity in antifungal agents, cilostazole, citalopram, diazepam, flurazepam, triazolam, saquinavir, tacrolimus, and warfarin (coumadin); Avoid using with St. John's Wort; May be used with antacids
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness When taken as directed, patient should experience a decrease in abdominal pain and/or GI irritation/bleeding; decrease in symptoms of GERD and erosive esophagitis
