Claire de Lune: Description

ANALYSIS ESSAY

2

The title of the song means moonlight, which mirrors the feel of the song and its musicality. The song has a soft, soothing rhythm that creates a dreamlike peaceful feeling as one listens. The rhythm is catchy and demands an audience. It captures the attention of the listener to the end, banking on its mysterious tonal variation, such that the listener does not know what to expect as the song progresses. It has a pleasant celestial melody that resonates with silence and peace. It uses tonal variation using instruments to create an almost celestial sweet melody. The melody and the rhythm work to design the harmony of the song (Scruton, 2011). Mood The song triggers a nostalgic, dreamy vibe. It makes one think about all the peaceful memories one has had. It makes one remain grounded and glued to the music, not responding to any distractions. The song creates a sad, melancholic mood, which makes the listener to remember the sad, soulful things of the past. Also, it gives one a sense of light rain at night while people play instruments silently. Apollonian vs. Dionysian The song “Clair de Lune” is Apollonian. It is about thinking and stillness. Dionysian music associates with dancing and movement and is generally ecstatic (Leeming, 2016). The song discussed herein has nothing to do with that. It is soft, pleasant and harmonious and inspires thoughts and feelings. Its musicality does not resonate with dance and such movement. It is more collected and grounding.

Impressionism as an Artistic Movement and as a Movement in Music

ANALYSIS ESSAY

3

Impressionism is an art movement that originated in France in the 19th century, which features light strokes in artistic items, making use of the changing light effects to achieve a certain feel (Olson, 2018). It concentrates more on expressing an experience or a feeling, rather than on the technicalities of an accurate depiction of an item. Therefore, it does not concentrate much on perfection. Impression as an art movement is similar to that in music in the mentioned sense. Both concentrate on evoking emotion rather than creating perfection. The goal of both is creating certain moods rather than telling a story of some kind (Byrnside, 1980). In the song, the artist uses an instrumentality to create emotions throughout the song. The speed of the tones varies in such a way that it creates differing emotions throughout its course. Both types of impressionism focus on the act of moving away from the normal way of doing this. They both aim at going against the status quo that was characteristic of the two artistic expressions. The major difference is the fact that music is not visual, but rather involves sound. Since Impressionism in both cases strives to use color to articulate certain feelings, the mode of doing so differs. In music, the color is referred to as timbre. Visual artists are at liberty to use different colors to create various pallets. On the other hand, musical artists as in Clair de Lune utilize instruments to draw the listeners to the quality of the song. Conclusion Music and Visual Art can and should share an artistic classification such as "Impressionism."It makes sense for them to share the same definition and expression. The connection is necessary since it focuses on the ability of art to evoke emotions and depict situations according to the moods they present. Both also share the same principles of focusing on perspective and veering from the traditional approaches of doing both forms of art. References
