Description

The Social World – SOCU 1003 Continuous assessment 1.1 – Sociological Cinema Exercise Video: Eff Ya Tea Time Based on a blog post from Rockstar Dinosaur Pirate Princess, titled “Consent: Not Actually That Complicated”, Eff Ya Tea Time is a video that focuses on discussions about sexual consent. Made by Explanations (2015), the video likens the initiation of sex to making a cup of tea. The author discusses sex by introducing the analogy of making a cup of tea through various scenarios. The controversial and obvious topic of sex is constructed into a context in which the idea becomes less perplexing. Eff Ya Tea Time raises issues such as male entitlement to women and the misconception of what consent means whether conscious or unconscious by asking “if you can understand how ludicrous it is to force people to have tea when they don’t want tea… then how hard is it to understand when it comes to sex?” By dispelling the common element of confusion surrounding sexual content, the author motivates change and challenges the modern-day flaws in the views of society. Before feminist sociology in the 1960s, society had mostly ignored the female population as society was patriarchal and structured to favor men (Van Krieken et al. pg. 13). Although the issue of sexual consent isn’t exclusive to women, Eff Ya Tea Time brings the concerns of male entitlement to women and society’s acceptance of rape culture being a sociological concept where it is pervasive and normalized. Society has harbored a definition of rape as the submission to a sexual encounter due to force or threat and the scenarios in which consent isn’t given is when a person firmly says “no” or screams and yells in unease. Eff Ya Tea Time brings many of society’s misconceptions on sexual consent where a “no, thank you” is denying the initiation of sex but when consent is given prior to the sexual counter is withdrawn, society argues that consent was given originally therefore cannot be retracted. The author of the video explains the multiple scenarios in which a person is not in a position to consent, has changed their mind or has previously consented yet that consent doesn’t always apply for future initiations to avoid any confusion. Sociology being the study of social behavior can provide the academic discipline on consent, safe sex and assault by recognizing the equality between women and men and investigating the “blurred lines” within consent.
