The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henríquez Response to the Question: “If you could hang out with one character in the book, who would it be and why? What would you do together? Being an immigrant is not as simple as it appears. Migrating to another country permanently in pursuit of a better future is not as easy as it would seem. The Book of Unknown Americans is a book about how a Latino family from Mexico had a hard time adjusting to settling in the United States after they moved there to obtain a better future for their daughter Maribel. The novel's primary focus is on immigrants' adaption to American society and the problems they experienced along the way. Maribel's family, the Riveras, met the Toro family, who had also moved to the United States from Panama, and a charming romance between Maribel from Mexico and Mayor from Panama unfolds. A young boy in a nearby apartment develops a life-changing bond with Maribel, which takes an unexpected turn as the plot continues. This novel will inform readers of the truthful difficulties and obstacles that immigrants experience in the United States. Alma Rivera, the main character and Maribel's mother, is the one character I would choose to hang out with because I want to learn from her experience and knowledge gained throughout struggles and hardship, help ease her guilt for not

Zaw 2 being responsible enough for her daughter, and console her by recalling what she has sacrificed for her family. To begin, one of the primary motives I chose Alma as the character with whom I would hang out is to learn from her experience and knowledge gained through of struggle and hardship. Alma Rivera has a wealth of experience and knowledge in caring for her family during their hard time adapting to America and also handling many different characters and challenges in terms of financial, emotional care, and family safety. A few chapters were also written based on Alma Rivera’s point of view about her life and multiple circumstances that she has encountered, proving how experienced and informed she is as a key character. In this book, the audience can feel the same way Alma Rivera had a big influence on her daughter, Maribel....
