Abstract
A current health related news related to disaster preparedness is what I will discuss in this
article. The brief introduction of the news, the reason why it happened and why
emergency supplement of health care facilities should be stressed have been discussed in
3 paragraphs. if we do not take measures to face these situations, the failure of caring
with skilled faculty surrounded but insufficient health care supplement is what we are
going to face up with. In this way the planning, category, and the lasting time of health
care facilities supplement are the questions that I will focused on.

According to CNN updated news on September 17, 2017(Yan, 2017), 14 elderly people
had been died of cardiac arrest, respiratory failure and hyperthermia in a sweltering
Florida nursing home. During that time, Hurricane Irma have just slammed into Florida
and left millions without power and air conditioning. The staff members at The
Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood made eight calls to 911 between September 11 and
13. The first call came in to report a patient in cardiac arrest at 3am on September 11.
Because of lack of air conditioner, the patient slouch over and barely breathing. Over the
next hour, staff members called 911 three more times for three different patients. Shouts
and commotion could be already heard in the background during that time. By 6:33 am,
the 911 call center had already received five calls from the nursing home that morning.
Until now, the authorities have not released the exact causes of death for the 14 nursing
home patients who died. However, Hollywood police said the deaths are part of an
ongoing criminal investigation.

In this event, as far as I am concerned, the reason why Holly Hills tragedy happened was
insufficient emergency supplement of the nursing home. The health care was totally
interfered with the running out of power and air conditioner. Although the patients there
were surrounded by professional health care providers, they still failed to get the care
they deserve because of the lack of emergency supplement.
As a nursing student, on no account should we ignore such issue. Because if we do not
take measures to face these situations, the failure of caring with skilled faculty
surrounded but insufficient health care supplement is what we are going to face up with.
The emergence, location or lasting time of disasters could not be predictable, but what we
can do is to be prepared. No matter for the health facilities or the health care providers.
The patients in health care facilities have already become more vulnerable, the lack of
care owing to lack of emergency supplement is not what they can bear anymore. If we
had paid attention to disaster preparedness of health care facilities earlier, we would have
solved it. Fortunately, Florida Gov. Rick Scott have set new emergency requirement for

the state’s nursing home after the Hollywood Hills tragedy. Only if every effective
measure has been taken, could we finally free from the hazard it takes.
