Description

Current Event Presentation For this presentation you will select a topic of interest that has been in the news within the last three months. I strongly suggest you select a topic that interests you and thus will potentially be interesting to your audience as well. Your typed topic selection is due at the beginning of class. For the current event topic selection assignment:  Identify your topic of choice  Include two paragraphs that  describe your topic, and explore 4 possible main points/avenues of thought. Kindly note that although I ask for 4 possible main points in topic selection assignments, I expect you to thoroughly delve into 2 for the presentation  explain why you are curious in it, and why you think your audience members will find the subject matter interesting Keep in mind that the more specific and narrow your identification of your topic is, the easier it will be for you to focus your research and organize your thoughts. Remember that no speeches will be given on unapproved topics. In other words, if a student decides not to submit his or her topic selection assignment, that student is willing to face the consequence of not signing up to speak. Also remember that the general purpose of this presentation is to inform, not to persuade. You will have 3-5 minutes to inform your audience about your topic. What you choose to discuss should help your audience understand your topic. For this assignment, you will need at least three newspaper or magazine articles. In other words, your speech must contain at least 3 print sources. Since this speech is designed to educate your audience on a topic they do not already know about in great detail it is important to have as much credibility as a speaker as possible. You can achieve this credibility through having credible sources that you reference in your speech. Please avoid website sources for this speech and instead concentrate on newspaper and magazine sources as those will be the most credible and up to date (you can, however, access newspaper and magazines that exist in print online). I recommend the databases available through the library for research. Note: When citing your sources during your speech, make sure to reference the actual source of the article and not the database. Your outline must adhere to the pattern of organization and indentation discussed in class. Kindly note that papers submitted in essay or paragraph form will not be graded and are not considered outlines. For a 3-5 minute presentation, your outline should be 2-3 single-spaced pages. Respectfully note that failure to turn in the topic selection at the beginning of class = no speech. Also, failure to turn in an outline at the beginning of class = no speech. If a student fails to be in class on time with a topic selection assignment or outline the student is sending an explicit message that says, “I do not want to present a current event presentation and I am prepared to face the consequences of my choice.” I also expect you to be present for the workshop(s) that

lead into the group presentation that precedes the class presentations. Remember, speechmaking is a process, and you need to be prepared and present for the entire process. The group presentation is worth 30 points and the class presentation is worth 30 points. All students who wish to speak must be in class at the beginning of class. If you fail to show up at the beginning of class, do not expect to present. If you have any questions about the speech, please contact me in advance. CURRENT EVENT PRESENTATION SUMMARY:     
