Description

Topic 3 Study Guide This study guide is optional. It is not an assignment and cannot be submitted. The purpose of the study guide is to prepare for the topic quiz. The more answers you find in the topic reading, the better you will be prepared. All answers can be found in the topic reading. The quiz will be graded for accuracy, so take time to seek the correct answers for this topic study guide before you attempt the quiz. Once you start the quiz, do not exit the quiz until the entire quiz is completed. Exiting out of the quiz before it is complete may result in a zero grade. Please type your answers below each question. 1. Summarize Isaiah 59:1-2. This passage is outlining the consequence of the fall of mankind to sin, by saying that because of sin, god can no linger communicate with us directly, but that His love for us means that he will not forsake us or leaves us alone. That he will always hear us if we speak to Him and emphasizes that because of sin, that we brought into this world, our hands are stained with blood and our fingers with guilt. 2. The textbook and overview make mention of Judges 21:25, "In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes" (ESV). This is a common refrain in Scripture (Deut. 12:8; Prov. 12:15; 26:12). What does this refrain indicate about the spiritual state of the people? That the people did not care about what God said was right or His laws, but they cared only for their own perception of righteousness 3. What is the prophecy in Genesis 3:15 known as, and what does it mean? It is called the protoevangelion, which means the first gospel. Most people feel like this is the first referral in the Old Testament to the coming of the Messiah 4. A main idea, according to the textbook, is that the history of humanity is characterized by a departure from what? The story of humankind is categorized by a parting from understanding, but God gives us optimism, liberation and reclamation 5. Which book of the Bible begins with the story of Moses? The book of Exodus. © 2021. Grand Canyon University. All Rights Reserved.

6. What kind of prayer is found in Nehemiah 9, and how does it contrast God and the people? It is a prayer sin confessing. The Israelites declared to God how mighty, wondrous, caring and gracious He is. They declared that even with these wonderful attributes, they went against Him. They then atone wholly with the purpose to follow Him. 7. Although created in the image of God, humanity became sinful by nature after the fall. How extensively does this original sin or depravity affect us according to Romans 3:10-23? Verse 23 of this passage states that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. This means that we lack righteousness, because we do not fear God and this leads to our unrighteousness, lying hearts, murderous thoughts, and putting ourselves on a path that is not what God planned for us. God holds us accountable by His law and this means that no one can earn their own justification. 8. How did the fall (sin of Adam and Eve) affect the world according to Genesis 3:16-19? It affected women by giving them pain in childbirth and having the desire for one's husband, who will have dominion over the woman. For men, it will be much more difficult to tend to the plants and get food from them due to weeds and the difficulty of extra labor. For all humans, when we die we will become the stuff God made our bodies from, dirt 9. What metaphor does the textbook use to describe idolatry? The text likens idolatry to an unfaithful significant other. It talks about Hosea who loved and cared for his wife even though she essentially cheated on him. 10. According to the textbook, what was the primary message of the Old Testament prophets? Their primary message was to get the Israelites to leave their idols and cling to God instead. 11. List the names of Israel's first three kings. 1) Saul, 2) David, 3) Solomon 12. After Israel divided into the northern kingdom and the southern kingdom, the southern kingdom of Judah endured much longer but eventually fell to what nation?

2

It fell to the nation of Babylon. 13. According to the textbook, the Wisdom literature (Job through Ecclesiastes) has what central theme? The theme is God's faithfulness to his promises even though the people were not faithful to Him. 14. According to this topic's assigned reading, "The Mystery of Original Sin: We Don't Know Why God Permitted the Fall, but We Know All Too Well the Evil and Sin That Still Plague Us," by Shuster, what is the problem with the world? The environment of Genesis 3 is the same environment that we are residing in today. Central points to the Story of Genesis and our lives today are the disbelief, being proud, and decisions that seem to have no consequence but yield many consequences. We are corrupted by sin and the world has a curse because of Adam and Eve's choices as well as our own.

15. According to that same Shuster article, why might God want us "to believe, trust, and obey him even when there is not a reason to do so that we can wrap our minds around"? The reason is that God fits in the epicenter of our existence and placing Him somewhere else would make us not have faith in, trusting, or submit to Him.
