Gonzalez 1 Ethan Gonzalez Mr. Wood Dual Enrollment U.S. History 15 October 2021 Winners and Losers of the American Revolution On April 19, 1775 a poorly prepared militia consisting of everyday farmers and merchants had decided that they were fed up with the treatment from the British. The American Revolution was filled with bloodshed and distaste towards those who dared to disagree with the patriots' cause. A good amount of people in the colonies were loyalists and preferred the British because their jobs depended on trade with them. The loyalists were assaulted on a regular basis and many loyalists got property taken leaving them. After the revolution property owning white patriot men took on the job of being in charge of the new nation. The nation however was no place for Natives and many of the Natives were forced to emigrate west. The losers of the American revolution were the native Americans and loyalists, the winners were the property owning white men. Many Natives fought alongside the British during the revolution and as a result after the war the tribes were split up. Fighting against the natives continued year after the war with the hope that the colonists could expand westward. That idea became a reality when, in 1779, native Americans, after surrendering to American troops, signed the Treaty of Greenville seceding most of Ohio and Indiana to the American government. This treaty forced the natives out of hunting grounds passed on from their ancestors. Another reason the Native Americas were the losers of the revolution was the annuity system. The annuity system was a way for the American government to continue to control the Native Americans by giving yearly grants to tribes that

Gonzalez 2 promoted government interference in tribal affairs. The outcome of the revolution on the native Americans was by far the worst; they lost land, traditions, and were relocated to reservations. In total about 25 percent of American colonists were loyalists and they were not safe after the revolution. The loyalists during and after the revolution were viewed as outsiders and even enemies. During the war of independence the loyalists had much of their property taken during the battles and were a constant target for attacks and injustice. Without property in America the loyalists were unable to hold a seat in government or even consider themselves free. No property in America meant that loyalists were not citizens and accordingly could not vote. Loyalists were under constant attack by the patriots with attacks going as far as getting tarred and feathered and publicly humiliated. With nothing left for them in the new nation many loyalists migrated out of the country, although a lot were exiled. Often the loyalists had to keep their views a secret in order to avoid unwanted attention so even if they did not lose the property they lost their ability to express free speech. Many of the colonists were for the democratic cause but that did not mean that all of them were going to enjoy the freedom of being independent from the British like others. The only colonists that got to enjoy the freedom of democracy were the land owning white men. After the revolution land owning white men got together and established their government. Owning land was very important because it meant you could vote in the representatives for your state and vote for the presidents. This allows for more representation in governmental decisions and foreign affairs. With a representative government now in place anyone deemed a citizen was now able to impose their ideas, not just follow the ideals of a monarch. Although the colonists were still being taxed by the government, having representation in how they were taxed was a big victory for the patriots.

Gonzalez 3 The results of the American Revolution had a lasting effect on the world and the country. The American revolution inspired the French revolution which led to a global decline in absolute monarchies throughout the world. But still in this country many Native American still live on reservations and although being a white male is not required to enjoy the freedoms of being an American for a while it was....
