Student Direcons for Case Study 2

Case Study #2 - “Diabetes and Insulin Signaling”: Week 1 – February 24-28, 2020 Week 2 – March 9 – 13, 2020 Overall Goal: The overall goal of this two-week project is to achieve a number of objectives. First, insulin is a major thread that is woven into this course (e.g. Humulin – first biologic in 1982, insulin receptor first purified using insulin affinity chromatography, etc.) so it makes sense to continue this major theme in discussion section. Second, and more fundamentally important, is to select a signaling pathway for an in-depth analysis. This case comes from a large bank of case studies from the National Center for Case Studies Teaching in Science (http://sciencecases.lib.buffalo.edu/cs/ ). This is a library of cases held by our sister school University at Buffalo. Before Week 1 you should review the first set of questions (see below for Week1) and sketch out some answers. If you typically have a laptop with you please bring it to class given that there is more information on-line than in your text to answer some of the questions. This case study is also designed to mix up the discussion format into a group discussion. The UG Teaching Assistants have answers to all the questions but your efforts may generate even more information than they have which I can add to the answer key for next semester. Week 1: Print out and bring a copy of the full case study for your reference to discussion. Form small groups of about five people each and read “Part I – Research Orientation.” In your groups, use a few minutes to go over the pathways shown in Excerpt 1 and complete Questions 1-7 on Page 4. These diagrams are quite minimal so it would be very useful to Google “insulin pathway images” to supplement these figures. Once all groups have completed the assignment, the entire section will discuss their answers in class. Parts 2 and 3 will be done during Week 2. All students should compile written answers to each question and submit them to your UG TA by the end of the discussion session. Feel free to supplement your answers based on the in-class discussion. Week 2: Re-form the groups from Week 1 and begin “Part II – Diabetes and Insulin Signaling.” Go over Excerpt 2 and 3, and then answer Questions 1-6 on Page 7. Review the questions as a class and then read “Part III – Insulin Resistance” and Excerpt 4. Answer Questions 1-3 as a group on Page 8, and then go over those questions as a class. Once again access to laptops is important for this section as well. The intent is to generate as comprehensive an answer as possible to all questions. All students should compile written answers to each question and submit them to your UG TA by the end of the discussion session. Feel free to supplement your answers based on the in-class discussion....
