Description

Plagiarism is defined as “steal[ing] and pass[ing] off the ideas or words of another as one's own: [to] use another's production without crediting the source ”according to MerriamWebster (n.d,). In Case Study: Class paper Arnie and Reggie are caught and punished for plagiarizing a paper, both are at fault for plagiarizing. The decisions they made lead them to turn in work that was not either of theirs. Reggie purposefully looked online for a way to circumvent having to read his course work and write the paper for his assignment by focusing on his sports and other classes. When looking online for more information about his reading assignment, instead of reading he came across a paper that had been written by someone else and changed the wording. Arnie took the information Reggie shared with him about the online paper and after some time chose to take the same path and use someone’s else’s work. Even though he attempted to read the assignment, when it became difficult, he decided to turn in plagiarize also. If Reggie had taken the time it took him to contact his advisor and search for shortcuts to the assignment and read the book instead, he could have produced his own work. He needed to manage his time appropriately and not procrastinate. By Lining up everything he would have to do and prioritizing his class work; he would have been better prepared for the reading. He was focused on doing minimal work in order to complete the assignment because he did not deem it important enough to dedicate time. On the other hand, Arnie attempted to read the book and became frustrated when he had difficulty understanding its content. It would have been better for him if he had reached out to his advisor, a tutor, or even his classmates for aid. Instead, upon hearing the way Reggie circumvented the assignment, Arnie decided to do the same. These circumstances of lack of time management, procrastination, under prioritizing, or frustration are a few reasons why a student would willingly plagiarize. When it comes to unwillingly plagiarizing there are a few strategies one can use to bypass doing so. Watch your formatting and properly use of citations. It can be easy to put in quote or paraphrase information and then forget to add quotations and cite the source. Use proper formatting and cite your source when writing your document instead of at the end to avoid forgetting. Another is using a free plagiarism checker online; I suggest using a minimum of two different ones every time you revise, add, or edit your writing assignment.
