Therapeutic Use
promotes incorporation of water into stool resulting softer fecal masses, may also promote electrolyte and water secretion into the colon
softening and passage of stool
Complications
Medication Administration
throat irritation, mild cramps, diarrhea, rashes
Oral: 50-400 mg in 1-4 divided doses
Contraindications/Precautions
Nursing Interventions
abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, especially when associated with fever or other signs of acute abdominal pain, hypersensitivity
administer will full glass of water/juice, may be administered on an empty stomach, do not administer within 2 hours of other laxatives

None significant
advise patients that laxatives should be used short-term therapy, encourage patients to use other forms of bowel regulation such as increasing bulk in diet and increasing fluid intake, advise patient not to use laxatives when abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever is present
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness soft formed bowel movement usually within 24-48 hours, therapy may take 3-5 days for results
