Description

Discuss how media language is used to construct narrative in “Dream”. One way in which media language is used to construct narrative in dream is the beginning of the video where we see Dizee Rascals’ name spelt out in children’s building blocks. The pastel coloured building blocks goes against the common stereotype of rappers , as you’d expect more of a dark colour scheme to correlate with the type of music. This helps create the narrative of Dream as the music video is heavily inspired by children’s tv shows . Barthes semiotic code could be applied to this as the pastel colours convey meanings of children and happiness. Another way narrative is constructed in this video is the use of the jack in the box. We see Dizee come out of the box before he starts rapping , at the end of the song he gets back in and the lady at the piano closes the lid. This could suggest that when he is out of the box he is free to say what he wants, tell his story and share his message ; however when he is inside the box he is silenced and the lid is shut . This could also suggest that the woman closing the box reinforces her power over him , as she looks to be of middle/upper class and she is white. Levi Strauss’ theory of binary opposition can be applied to this as it’s the woman vs Dizee Rascal she has power over him. A third and final way narrative is constructed is through the use of the microphone. Halfway through the song , Dizee gets a microphone and once he does the tone of the song changes. He then starts rapping about his personal life and his journey from deprivation to becoming a successful rapper as he followed his dream. He physically and metaphorically gets a voice once given the microphone .This is effective as the meaning of the song is to have a dream and follow it , and he shows that’s what he did....
