Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10) What is it? A self-administered questionnaire used to screen a patient for a possible dysphagia and aspiration risk.
Who uses it? All populations who can fill out a questionnaire are able to take the EAT-10, however, some populations need it more. For example, since dysphagia is seen mostly in older adults and people with neurological disorders, these populations would need the EAT10 more.
How is it scored? There are 10 questions worth 4 points each. Scores can range from 0 to 40. The patient fills out the questionnaire themselves. Then, the numbers are added up. Any score 3 or over can mean a possible swallowing difficulty.
Why is it important? The EAT-10 helps to identify any swallowing difficulties early on in order to help the patient before the problem progresses or causes other more serious issues such as aspiration pneumonia....
