EE4153 Telecommunication Systems Tutorial 5
1.
Can you briefly describe the two primary PCM multiplexes DS1 and E1? How frame synchronization is achieved in DS1 and E1?
2.
Sketch a 3-stage space-division switching network for connecting 100 incoming trunks to 100 outgoing trunks using switches of different sizes. Calculate the number of crosspoints required for the following two cases: (a) Case 1: using 5x5 switches for the 1st and 3rd stages and 20x20 switches for the 2nd stage. (b) Case 2: using 10x10 switches only. A total traffic of 30 Erlangs is offered to the network. Assuming that traffic is evenly distributed over the incoming/outgoing trunks. Estimate the internal blocking probability for each of the cases in (a) and (b). (Note: the internal blocking probability of a switching network is defined as the probability that a free inlet cannot be connected to a free outlet, due to the lack of free links within the switching network). What conclusion can you draw?
3.
Design a 3-stage space-division switching network to connect 512 incoming trunks to 512 outgoing trunks with the minimum number of crosspoints. (i) Sketch the network indicating the size of switches in each stage. (ii) Determine the number of crosspoints required by the network. (iii) If the network is offered with 307.2 Erlangs of traffic, which is evenly distributed among all the incoming/outgoing trunks, estimate the internal blocking probability....
