Description

Argumentative Essay Children as target of advertising Children are more often and often exposed to advertisements. Whether they see it on the television or in social games. There is an increase in targeted ads and these can mislead children according to advocates, says Victor Luckerson (2015). In fact it is known that these ads can influence children’s eating habits. The question is if it is responsible to manipulate and influence young children via misleading advertisements. First, according to studies in Journal of Advertising (2013) children acknowledge the presence of advertisements in social games yet hold uncritical behavior towards them. Since they do not have a critical attitude towards them, it is not acceptable to manipulate these little children. Also kids are very sensible to peer pressure and the advertisers know this very well. It is unethical for advertisers to seek children’s weakness and act on it. Second, Halford (2013) found that television provides the first experiences of commercial promotion to children. These children are able to be loyal to a brand at the age of two to three years old this means that they are influenced even before they have the ability to read. Little children who are in their toddler phase have the bad habit of crying to get what they want for example in the grocery store. So they are able to persuade their parents to buy a specific product they most likely have seen in a commercial on TV. Finally, food ads targeted at kids mostly promote unhealthy food with lots of fat. This means that kids are manipulated to like this type of food over healthy, nutritious food. This is a big problem as this can lead to a global increase of unhealthy eating habits and thus promoting obesity, according to the British Medical Journal (2019). Proponents of advertising to kids say that children also should be able to get targeted because how would they otherwise get to know new things and maybe find new interests. Also, it is the parents responsibility to teach their children to eat healthy and be able to disallow children when they keep on asking for a specific (unhealthy) product. In conclusion, there are many reasons to think that promoting things to children is unethical. For example, that kids are easy targets who are easy to manipulate. Maybe a solution could be to only promote healthy food and positive things to children so they are not influenced by bad things.
