1) Define the conflict between FC Barcelona and La Liga from

the perspectives of both parties, framing your definitions within established sources and types of conflict. a) FC Barcelona’s perspective: The history behind FC Barcelona dates back to when natives of Catalonia were prohibited from speaking their very own language and demonstrating any sense of patriotism, as explained by British Broadcasting Corporation. This is absolutely unimaginable to people of many other countries that are free to demonstrate their pride in their country every single day. However, Catalonians had one place to escape from these constraints. This escape happened to be FC Barcelona. Whenever Catalonians attended these games, they were able to show support of their favorite team with no boundaries. The rule of Franco was one of much deprivation, but it allowed them to create a special bond with their soccer team. This is how the motto “més que un club” was coined and continues to represent their undying support of FC Barcelona. It is understandable that FC Barcelona wants to stand by their people and truly uphold their position as “more than a club”. This history has great significance because it truly defines FC Barcelona as a club. b) La Liga’s perspective: On the other hand, La Liga argues that there is no question what will occur if Catalonia separates from Spain-- FC Barcelona will no longer play in La Liga. Javier Tebas has confirmed that FC Barcelona will have no part in La Liga if the split occurs, as reported by The Independent World News. The laws in Spain completely back up Tebas’ concerns which seems to leave the league with no other option. Tebas has also said that he hopes it doesn’t come down to this, so clearly he understands FC Barcelona’s important role in La Liga. 2) Identify important underlying mutual interests between FC Barcelona and La Liga a) The underlying interests of both parties will impact the future and how we proceed from here. This will also open the doors to clear communication. FC Barcelona seems to want to uphold their status as “more than a club” and they simply do not want to disappoint their people since they hold them to such a high standard. La Liga similarly wants to please their fans and not lose profit. There is an important mutual underlying interest that lies in the iconic rivalry between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. They would lose one of its fiercest rivalries between the two teams. Many fans dedicate so much energy and passion into supporting their favorite teams go head-to-head, and in an instant, this classic would be no more. This would be detrimental to both FC Barcelona and La Liga. Now, you must both ask yourselves: what will make our fans feel the most fulfilled while still making a profit? The answer is simple. If FC Barcelona continues to play in La Liga, whether or not Catalonia claims independence, fans will still be able to watch their dearest team in one of the biggest, most prominent leagues. Likewise, fans of La Liga and fans of the rivalry between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona will continue to indulge in this iconic sports rivalry known as El Clasico. Of course, current Spanish laws

prohibit FC Barcelona to play in the Spanish league if the split does occur, but thousands upon thousands of sports fans would be willing to lobby in support for these laws to be altered. 3) Propose communication techniques and skills to be used in resolving the conflict. a) At the end of the day, both parties will face immense losses if FC Barcelona ends up leaving La Liga. La Liga would suffer economic trouble because FC Barcelona brings in substantial profit for the league. Many people would stop watching for the sole reason that their favorite team would no longer be playing in the league. FC Barcelona would also undergo hardships of their own. It would be undetermined in which league FC Barcelona would play, and there would be a high possibility that they would not be playing in such a distinguished league. They would also no longer compete against their greatest rival, which would certainly deteriorate their game as a whole, and both fan bases would not be pleased. We need to place a strong emphasis on communication, now more than ever. I would like to propose that both sides begin by asking leading questions where you will both ask each other questions that cannot be simply answered in one word. When listening to one another, feel free to provide feedback in order to promote healthy conversation. I want both parties to continue to use the dialogue form of communication. Through dialogue, we will be focused on understanding each side’s point of view and working together, rather than critiquing one another. This will prove to be very useful for the current situation and help us in building rapport, meaning both sides’ ideas and concerns are validated. 4) Propose a form of negotiation (e.g. distributive or integrative bargaining) to be used in resolving the conflict. a) Without a doubt, the most effective form of negotiation for this particular situation would be integrative bargaining. This would allow both sides to “win”, meaning both are left better off. Although this is not a simple process, it is certainly achievable and is the best option moving forward. Both parties will face some compromise, but your relationship will be strengthened as a result. The Feel, Felt, Found technique will help the present situation the most successfully. This comes down to empathy, and like we discussed before, it allows both parties to really be heard. Similarly, we will also use the Set Aside technique where any negative assumptions are put aside in order to look clearly at the encouraging opportunities for solution. As a starting point, we can talk about how FC Barcelona has publicly stated their desire to stay in La Liga. 5) Identify factors (e.g. personalities) and barriers that will need to be managed and resolved in resolving the conflict. a) This should not be looked at as a clash, but rather as a compromise. I want both sides to understand that their concerns are being heard, and taken into consideration. Futbol is a sport that brings people together. In these times, we must focus on how this wonderful sport should continue to unite people as one rather than divide society. Currently, I see a crucial

issue that could lead to a catastrophic downfall with both FC Barcelona and La Liga: this being, a superiority complex. Inside sources from FC Barcelona, reported by the British Broadcasting Corporation, have claimed that “any league would be eager to have [them], including Spain’s” (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-41346846). La Liga has had a similar attitude, with president Javier Tebas saying Barcelona would “slip from the top table of European football” if they no longer played in La Liga, as reported by Goal News. (https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/catalanindependence-how-barcelona-la-liga-affectedspain/1icqc7ydhk7wl1qhlhm7m4v6ez). Both FC Barcelona and La Liga need to accept the fact that they need each other to succeed, so some mutual respect between the two would be ideal. If FC Barcelona and La Liga come out publicly in regards to their support for one another, policymakers will take note of this. Their wish to move forward mutually will captivate the attention of many and force them to take into consideration the enormous following that is behind these two parties. Thank you so much for your time, and I look forward to seeing the resolution to this conflict....
