FdRel 250 Lesson 05 Weekly Reading & Writing Template Submit by Due Date #1 Name: Paige Woolstenhulme Date: 10/10/2016 While you read about the Abrahamic Covenant (Abraham 1-2; Genesis 12; Genesis 17; Russell M. Nelson, “Covenants,” S. Michael Wilcox, “The Abrahamic Covenant) answer the following question: 1. Write one paragraph answering the question, “What is the Abrahamic Covenant?” (4-5 sentences): The Abrahamic Covenant is a promise made by God to Abraham. In this covenant is the stipulation that all who are descendants of Abraham who remain faithful to their covenants will be blessed. These blessings include eternal increase in marriage, being seen as select, chosen children, of God, and promised lands. The covenant is not just a free gift, as those blessed more will there be more required of. 2. Describe five fundamental principles a person should understand in order to have an accurate understanding of the Abrahamic Covenant as related to the Savior and His everlasting gospel. (2-3 sentences each. Include reference, citation, and explanation.) Principle #1: #1: Scriptural Reference: Because the seed of Abraham was elected, or chosen, to minister to and bless all the families of the earth with the blessings of the gospel, early in history the Lord placed them in a land conducive to fulfilling this responsibility. Explanation: God saw an opportunity here to let good be in control. The scattering of these people was purposeful. Setting an example was paramount to him, thus came the chosen leaders of the Holy Land, which are mentioned in the scriptures. Principle #2: #2: Scriptural Reference: “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:16–17). As recipients of Abraham’s covenant today, we have the delicate challenge of blessing all the families of all the nations of the world without assimilating their values, traditions, beliefs, standards, or behaviors. We are not to repeat the mistake of either the Old or the New Testament people. Citation: https://www.lds.org/ensign/1998/01/the-abrahamic-covenant?lang=eng Explanation: The Abrahamic Covenant is for everyone, none excluded, as we are all Abraham’s descendant. Principle #3: #3: Scriptural Reference: The Lord expects Abraham’s seed of today to respond to the charge given of old: “And thou shalt teach [the commandments] diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up” (Deut. 6:7). Citation: https://www.lds.org/ensign/1998/01/the-abrahamic-covenant?lang=eng Explanation: We must teach others. The passing on of our knowledge only helps to increase the world’s, and in turn our own, understandings of the gospel and how we may benefit from the Abrahamic Covenant. Principle #4: #4: Scriptural Reference: “And, finding there was greater happiness and peace and rest for me, I sought for the blessings of the fathers, and the right whereunto I should be ordained to administer the same; having been myself a follower of righteousness” (Abr. 1:2). Citation: https://www.lds.org/ensign/1998/01/the-abrahamic-covenant?lang=eng
Explanation: The Abrahamic Covenant did not originate with Abraham, but rather Adam. He was only just a recipient of it, as we are. Principle #5: #5: Scriptural Reference: Every covenant involves two parties. Citation: https://www.lds.org/ensign/1998/01/the-abrahamic-covenant?lang=eng Explanation: The Abrahamic Covenant involves not just you (and in the case you and your spouse), but God. This means countless blessings from him, or as mentioned blessings “As innumerable as the stars.” What two questions do you have as a result of your study of the Abrahamic Covenant? Question #1: What blessings after death do we receive from the Abrahamic Covenant? Question #2: In what ways do we enter the Abrahamic Covenant other than in marriage? When you have finished, save your document and upload it back into I-Learn. Submit it to “L05 Writing Assignment”. Make sure you also complete the group preparation by due date #1. This is outlined on the Lesson 05 Preparation page. page. ...
