FdRel 250 Lesson 10 Weekly Reading & Writing Template Submit by Due Date #1 Name: Taylor Woolstenhulme Date: Novemeber 14, 2017 Read the events of the Savior’s life as outlined in I-Learn, as well as the following: Bible Dictionary, “Atonement,” p. 617; 2 Nephi 2; 2 Nephi 9; Alma 7; Alma 42; Doctrine & Covenants 19:16-19. Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “The Gift of Grace,” Ensign, Apr. 2015; David A. Bednar, “The Atonement & the Journey of Mortality,” Ensign, April 2012.

1. Share one scripture and one quote from a modern prophet that helps answer each of the questions below. For each source provide a reference, quote and a detailed explanation (75-100 words) of how it helps answer the question. a. Why did Christ perform the atonement? Scripture reference and quotation: John 17 1-3

"1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy son also my glorify thee: 2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." Explanation: While there are a lot of reasons behind the Atonement, I think one of the most important behind the redemption of our sins and the ability of everlasting life is the understanding that we have of God and Christ because of the Atonement. Personally, an understanding of what it took to achieve the Atonement is one of the things that strengthened my testimony the most. It makes me so grateful when I understand the sacrifices that were made for me. Prophetic quotation and reference:

Dieter F. Uchtdorf “The Gift of Grace” - "The grace of God is our great and everlasting hope. Through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the plan of mercy appeases the demands of justice 'and [brings] about means unto men that they may have faith unto repentance.'

Our sins, though they may be as scarlet, can become white as snow. Because our beloved Savior ‘gave himself a ransom for all,’ an entrance into His everlasting kingdom is provided unto us." Explanation: This touches base on the very important knowledge about how there are certain rules that demands that have to be met for us to receive the blessings of the Atonement. There are still a lot that I don't know about the ‘demands’ that needed to be met, but I would like to understand more. Once Christ met these demands, we then had the availability of repenting of our sins and becoming pure again. b. How does a person unlock the blessings of the Atonement of Jesus Christ in their life? Scripture reference and quotation: John 14: 6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the

way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Explanation: I n hindsight, I think that this scripture was talking more about how without Jesus performing the Atonement, we would would never get back to God, but I think that it still hold truths as to how we can come to use the Atonement. Truly, if we have any questions as to how to use and receive the blessing of the Atonement, the one thing that we can always do is pray. We can also learn so much from the teachings that we have from Jesus that are held in the Bible and the Book of Mormon. Prophetic quotation and reference:David A. Bednar,"The Atonement &

the Journey of Mortality" - “A  s we progress in the journey of mortality from bad to good to better, as we put off the natural man or woman in each of us, and as we strive to become saints and have our very natures changed, then the attributes detailed in this verse increasingly should describe the type of person you and I are becoming. We will become more childlike, more submissive, more patient, and more willing to submit.” Explanation: T  o me, this really says that to reap the benefits of the Atonement we need to be doing things on a daily basis, it is not just something that you have to do once and then it is done. We will always have Satan present in our lives trying to get us to do wrong, and we will make mistakes because we are not perfect. But because of the Atonement we have the availability to try and do better everyday and repent for the mistakes that we make.

2. In what ways has the Atonement blessed your life? (7-8 sentences) This is a loaded question. There are so many ways that the Atonement has blessed my life that I actually don't even fully understand all of them. There is obviously the most noticeable blessing, and that is how I can repent for my sins. I can learn to let go of the mistakes that I have made and not dwell on them but move on to better things. But like I said before in one of the explanations above is that just an understanding of what Jesus did for me is enough for me to owe my life to Him. It makes me more motivated to do the things that He wants me to do. If you really make sure to remember the things that Christ did for us on a daily basis, I honestly think that we would all be much more motivated to do the right things and be better equipped to curb any influences that Satan has over us. 3. What two questions do you have as a result of your study this week? Question #1: What do we know about the demands that needed to be met

through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ ? Question #2: What is a unique understand of the Atonement that we have

that most other Christian churches do not? When you have finished, save your document and upload it back into I-Learn. Submit it to “L10 Writing Assignment”....
