FdRel 250 Lesson 10 Weekly Reading & Writing Template Submit by Due Date #1 Name: Paige Woolstenhulme Date: November 19, 2016 Read the events of the Savior’s life as outlined in I-Learn, as well as the following: Bible Dictionary, “Atonement,” p. 617; 2 Nephi 2; 2 Nephi 9; Alma 7; Alma 42; Doctrine & Covenants 19:16-19. Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “The Gift of Grace,” Ensign , Apr. 2015; David A. Bednar, “The Atonement & the Journey of Mortality,” Ensign , April 2012. Share one scripture and one quote from a modern prophet that helps answer each of questions below. For each question provide THREE citations, referencing the source for each, and a detailed explanation (75-100 words) of how these quotes and scriptures help answer the question. Why did Christ perform the atonement? Scripture reference and quotation: 8 Wherefore, how great the

importance to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth, that they may know that there is no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down his life according to the flesh, and taketh it again by the power of the Spirit, that he may bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, being the first that should rise. Explanation: Jacob wrote, around 588 years before the coming of Christ, concerning the importance of his sacrifice. He wrote that it was of great importance that Christ set an example in resurrection. Prophetic quotation and reference:  It is one thing to know that Jesus

Christ came to earth to die for us—that is fundamental and foundational to the doctrine of Christ. But we also need to

appreciate that the Lord desires, through His Atonement and by the power of the Holy Ghost, to live in us—not only to direct us but also to empower us. - The Atonement and the Journey of Mortality - Elder David R. Bednar Explanation: Christ did it not only to allow us to cleanse ourselves, but to allow our Heavenly Father to empower us. He wanted a connection with us that we had to forge, and because of that we are given guidance and protection. How does a person unlock the blessings of the Atonement of Jesus Christ in their life? Scripture reference and quotation: D&C19: 16 For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent; 17 But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; 18 Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink— 19 Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men. Explanation: All you have to do to unlock the blessings of the Atonement is to repent. We just need to be like unto the children of men and seek only the good, which includes repentance.

Prophetic quotation and reference: “In Jacob’s words, “Why not speak

of the atonement of Christ, and attain to a perfect knowledge of him?”4 But as “we talk of Christ, … rejoice in Christ, … preach of Christ, [and] prophesy of Christ”5 at every opportunity, we must never lose our sense of awe and profound gratitude for the eternal sacrifice of the Son of God.” - The Gift of Grace President Dieter F. Uchtdorf. https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2015/04/the-gift-of-grace ?lang=eng Explanation: This quote is important to me because it shows one of the best ways we can always be blessed by Christ’s sacrifice; simply be in awe of it. Tell it to everyone

you meet, post it on social media, shout it from the mountaintops, even if no one is listening but you and God. In what ways has the Atonement blessed your life? (7-8 sentences) I think the introduction quoted it best when it referenced this quote: “our spirits must become subject to that angel who fell from before the presence of the Eternal God, and became the devil, to rise no more…our spirits must have become like unto him, and we become devils, angels to a devil, to be shut out from the presence of our God, and to remain with the father of lies, in misery, like unto himself” (2 Ne 9;8-9). We came here to be able  to return to our Heavenly Father and to learn what we needed to learn to become like him. This was only possible with the atonement. It still astounds me that this is the plan that was set out for me, and that I cannot know for which reasons exactly. But I grow with my testimony each day knowing that faith in this will bless me. Christ is my brother, and as such he has set an example for me in knowing which path to take. Just like with my physical brothers, my spiritual brother is always a constant influence on me.

What two questions do you have as a result of your study this week? Question #1: How did Christ dying the way he did translate to our being able to cleanse our souls? Question #2: Is Christ the physical son of our Heavenly Father while we are only spiritual children? When you have finished, save your document and upload it back into I-Learn. Submit it to “L10 Writing Assignment”. Make sure you also complete the In-Class Sharing preparation by due date #1. This is outlined on the Lesson 10 Preparation page....
