FdRel 250 Lesson 04 Weekly Reading & Writing Template Submit by Due Date #1

Name: Paige Woolstenhulme Date: 2 October 2016

While you read the teachings about accepting the Lord and His prophets (Moses 6-7; D. Todd Christofferson, “Come to Zion”) answer the following question:

•

What was the path and principles necessary for building and establishing Zion in

Enoch’s day?

After you have read and pondered on this question provide at least five specific scriptural

references related to the building and establishment of Zion anciently. For each answer, provide a reference, brief citation, and thoughtful explanation. Each explanation should be 2-3 sentences.

Scriptural Reference #1: The Lord called Enoch’s people Zion “because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them” (Moses 7:18). Elsewhere He said, “For this is Zion—the pure in heart” (D&C 97:21). Citation: https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2008/10/come-to-zion?lang=eng Explanation: Enoch’s people were referred to as Zion because of the reasons listed above. It was not because they were just scraping by with their duties they were fulfilling them with a glad heart and a smile on their faces.

Scriptural Reference #2: The Lord calls upon us to be beacons of righteousness to guide those who seek the safety and blessings of Zion: “Verily I say unto you all: Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations; Citation: https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2008/10/come-to-zion?lang=eng

Explanation: I love this verse because it shows not only what effect the people of the city of Enoch had on others, but how we can follow in their footsteps. We have that ability, as a people at the top of the hill.

Scriptural Reference #3: Much of the work to be done in establishing Zion consists in our individual efforts to become “the pure in heart” (D&C 97:21). “Zion cannot be built up unless it is by the principles of the law of the celestial kingdom,” said the Lord; “otherwise I cannot receive her unto myself” (D&C 105:5). The law of the celestial kingdom is, of course, the gospel law and covenants, which include our constant remembrance of the Savior and our pledge of obedience, sacrifice, consecration, and fidelity. Citation: https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2008/10/come-to-zion?lang=eng Explanation: This verse spoke to me because it showed that celestial beings are not just those who do the bare minimum. They do everything they can to become like unto Christ, never ceasing to climb one rung higher.

Scriptural Reference #4: Moses 7: 19 And Enoch continued his preaching in righteousness unto the people of God. And it came to pass in his days, that he built a city that was called the City of Holiness, even Zion. 20 And it came to pass that Enoch talked with the Lord; and he said unto the Lord: Surely Zion shall dwell in safety forever. But the Lord said unto Enoch: Zion have I blessed, but the residue of the people have I cursed. Citation: Moses 7: 19-20 Explanation: God did not want to suffer those whom he prized above all else more than necessary. Bringing them up was necessary.

Scriptural Reference #5: Moses 7:21 And it came to pass that the Lord showed unto Enoch all the inhabitants of the earth; and he beheld, and lo, Zion, in process of time, was taken up into heaven. And the Lord said unto Enoch: Behold mine abode forever. Citation: Moses 7:21

Explanation: When those who need not suffer longer are in a position to be brought back to Heavenly Father, not much will stand in the way of the work that needs to be done elsewhere. No matter the inconvenience as sometimes occurs down here.

What two principles of Zion taught by Elder Christofferson seem relevant to the experience

of the people of Enoch and Church members living today charged with the building and establishment of Zion? •

For each principle, provide a quote and thoughtful explanation. Each explanation should be

2-3 sentences.

Principle #1: Zion must be made of those willing to follow the laws of faithfulness in all things. Quote: Zion is Zion because of the character, attributes, and faithfulness of her citizens. Remember, “the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them” (Moses 7:18) Explanation: I like this quote because it shows that Zion isn’t just a place, it’s a mindset. It’s people building their homes and each other up.

Principle #2: Zion should be a priority. Quote: The Prophet Joseph Smith said, “We ought to have the building up of Zion as our greatest object” (Teachings: Joseph Smith,  186). In our families and in our stakes and districts, let us seek to build up Zion through unity, godliness, and charity, preparing for that great day when Zion, the New Jerusalem, will arise. Explanation: Zion is not just a project we should work on once a month. It should be on our minds and our hearts.

What two questions do you have as a result of your study this week?

Question #1: Where shall our modern Zion be made?

Question #2: Is it possible, even with all the confusion and strife in the world, to be banded together as the people of Zion without persecution from the outside world?

When you have finished, save your document and upload it back into I-Learn. Submit it to “L04Writing Assignment”.

Make sure you also complete the group preparation by due date #1. This is outlined on the Lesson 04 Preparation page....
