Description

1. What two common Indian stereotypes might Victor and Thomas represent (refer to optional reading Fantasies of the Master Race)? a. One stereotype is that Victor and Thomas are “people without a culture.” Although the film showed very briefly some aspects of the Indian culture, culture in general was not the main point. Another stereotype is the long hair. They stereotyped the Indian people to have long hair. 2. How are those stereotypes addressed and then complicated? a. It is complicated by having to join American life away from the reservation. Different events such as when they say that an Indian is nothing without their hair, it is making the decision of Arnold of cutting his hair a complication of a stereotype.. 3. Address the concept of fatherlessness and how it is handled within the film. a. As Victor grew up without his father, he is seen to be very aggressive and closed off to himself. Thomas had a better look at this situation. This was handled to be a factor where people can be very different and seeing that one was very pained by this and the other was not, it shows how such a problem can affect people. 4. What is a possible thesis statement or theme for this film? a. A possible theme can be about how a simple difference in perspective can drastically change who a person is. 5. How does the narrative structure of the film support its thematic objectives? a. The flashbacks of the two character’s childhood memories allows the film to flow better and allows the audience to see the main point of the film. If this film were to go on without these, I think it would be easy to get lost and be frustrated on why certain characters acted in a certain way and why certain things happened....
