PREPARED BY:

GROUP 2

NOTED BY: Jenifer Reyes, PhD Adviser

Project Title The title of the project is entitled DRAGON BEE Z: Search for the 7 Nutrients which corresponds to the project objectives made by the proponents. Project Duration The project will take 5 months (January to May) which includes the planning, preparation and the implementation of the project. Project Scope The project will be located at the back of the CITHM (College of International Tourism and Hospitality Management). This is the chosen site for it is the most appropriate location for the said project and to the chosen beneficiaries. Project Status The project is not new and there is still living dragon fruit plants at CITHM backyard and the proponents want to continue it giving it a more comprehensive garden since the project is left dense and weedy. Project Beneficiaries This project aims to benefit the students of L003 group 2 members, the CITHM department and Enverga students and the Bee Farm inside the campus.

Project Background Imagine the existence of manmade plantation around every corner. You can witness the beauty of green colored plants and breath fresh air. Nowadays the existence of these sites are very few, instead humans take places for granted. These results to pollution and problems that we humans are experiencing now. In the Philippines we cannot deny the presence of these problems. Our pollution is evident which is cause by the abuse of our natural resources. In line with this, the country has been experiencing with a few supply of our needs which inflates prices. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) releases inflation data every 1st week of the month for the public to be aware of just how much prices have changed compared to a year ago. The past few months of 2018, the inflation rate seems to be rapidly rising. Hence, the CWTS-students of L003 Group 2 formulated a project that would address these problems and being able to help the chosen beneficiaries. With a rising cost of vegetables here in the Philippines these past few months, (August 2018- onwards) this little action may help students and faculties of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation to produce their own dragon fruit in their own little way by planting dragon fruit in a small space of crop located near the MSEUF

covered court. By then, we can help the community by teaching ourselves to plant vegetables instead to buying from the market. This price increase may affect the community because vegetables are one of the primary needs of people for them to eat especially that it is the only nutritious food that can be cooked without spending money too much. This project may not help to stop the price increase of vegetables but it will help the community to think an effective way of producing vegetables even in school or in your backyard. By then, we can teach the community to have vegetables placed on every household’s table without spending a large amount of money due to the inflation. Project Justification The proponents conducted a visitation to the areas of their possible project location. During the visitation the proponents addresses the following problems they encounter during the visitation conducted on January 2019. After consolidating everyone’s idea, the proponents come up with the Dragon Bee Z: Search for Seven Nutrients to be done in their project location which is the backyard behind CIHTM. The backyard is the best place for the Dragon Fruit to grow since it has been a plantation of dragon fruit before but it has been left untouched. It has been proven that there is a need of the project location to be enhanced. Additionally, the dragon fruit, also known as pitahaya or strawberry pear, is a tropical fruit known for its vibrant red skin and sweet, seed-speckled pulp. Its unique look and acclaimed super food powers have made it popular among foodies and the healthconscious.

Based on National Academy of Sciences, throughout human history, dragon fruit have been the object of pervasive and at times dominant artistic and intellectual interest. Dragon Fruit were important subjects from the earliest study of life processes, and they were central to scientific study in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Dragon fruit has an extremely low amount of cholesterol, which ultimately helps the body break down this fruit quickly, keeping you happy and healthy. It’s the perfect fruit to maintain your weight and satisfy your sweet tooth. Plants are important in maintaining a healthy environment, for example, by controlling erosion and water pollution, and by helping to reduce air pollution. They improve the environment for human activities everywhere—from indoor spaces to vast wilderness areas. (Kanjana et al., 2006) Also based on Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Dragon fruits are cool. Plants move, grow, breathe, and even see. They have muscles, choose mates, and have families and sleep. They know self-defence and how to wage chemical war. They’re solar-powered and recyclable. Dragon fruits are rich in vitamins including vitamin C, B1, B2 and B3. They are also rich in minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium and phosphorus. They are also a good source of fiber, protein and omega essential fatty acids. Equally important is that these fruits are rich in antioxidants as high as acai berries, which is why people often label the dragon fruit as a “super-fruit”. (Abdul Azis Ariffin et al., 2008). Posted on Healthline.com (https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/dragonfruit-benefits#section), the seven benefits of Dragon Fruit namely 1. High in nutrients; Dragon fruit is low in calories but packed with essential vitamins and minerals. It also contains a substantial amount of dietary fiber. 2. May Help Fight

Chronic Disease; Free radicals are unstable molecules that cause cell damage, which may lead to inflammation and disease. One way to combat this is by eating antioxidant-rich foods like dragon fruit. Antioxidants work by neutralizing free radicals, thus preventing cell damage and inflammation. Studies suggest that diets high in antioxidants may help prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and arthritis. 3. Loaded With Fiber; Dietary fibers are nondigestible carbohydrates that boast an extensive list of potential health benefits. 4. Promotes a Healthy Gut; Given that dragon fruit contains prebiotics, it can potentially improve the balance of good bacteria in your gut. Prebiotics are a specific type of fiber that promotes the growth of healthy bacteria in your gut. 5. Strengthens Your Immune System; Dragon fruit’s high supply of vitamin C and carotenoids may offer immune-boosting properties. 6.

May Boost Low Iron

Levels; Dragon fruit is one of the few fresh fruits that contain iron. Dragon fruit supplies iron along with vitamin C, a combination that may improve your body’s absorption of this important mineral. 7. Good Source of Magnesium; Dragon fruit is a great source of magnesium, a nutrient needed for over 600 biochemical reactions in your body.

Project Objectives The primary focus and intention of DRAGON BEE Z: Search for the 7 Nutrients is to continue the dragon fruit plantation at the chosen site of the proponents which

tends to help their beneficiaries. In line with the primary objective, they aim to achieve the following specific objectives towards the end of the project: 1. To help and support the school towards the beautification of the chosen site. 2. To contribute to the environment in terms of providing more plants that is proven effecting on reducing pollution. 3. To align with the objectives to existing bee farm of the university, the dragon fruit flowers will provide foods for the bees. 4. To educate 5% of the people around the community of Enverga University about the importance of having their own fruit garden and the nutrients the dragon fruit can offer in connect with the existence of inflation and health problems. 5. To create a Dragon Fruit Plantation that is attractive to the millennials through using a theme which is Dragon Balls Z, an anime that is well acknowledge by most of the Filipino people. 6. To provide the proponents a rich learning experience that will shape their strategic skills with coping to society challenges; and to foster camaraderie among others Project Description

The project started into a piece of idea the proponents got after their visitation. The project Dragon Bee Z: Search for the 7 Nutrients will start from December 2018 until March 2019. The group will follow their implementation plan to make sure that they are able to achieve their objectives on time. Although this project is a trial and error process, we will give our full effort for the project beneficiaries. Knowing that planting a dragon fruit is not that easy, each of the member should assure that the plant will survive and have at least one fruit. Every week the group will conduct an observation if there are any changes with the plant. Additionally, to observe its condition for us to really make the project possible.
