Description of Skill Health promotion enables people to increase control over their own health. It covers a wide range of social and environmental interventions that are designed to benefit and protect individual people's health and quality of life by addressing and preventing the root causes of ill health, not just focusing on treatment and cure.

Indications Factors affect adults >65 include: Mobility: arthritis, osteoporosis, falls Possible CV diseases: Coronary artery disease, HTN Other disorders: Stroke, diabetes mellitus, chronic pain, issues related to poor dental hygiene (e.g. gingivitis, missing teeth, gum disease) incontinence, cataracts

Outcomes/Evaluation Patient will have understanding of medications and use of assistive devices if prescribed. Patient will increase physical activity Patient will prevent injury from happening at home by: installing bath rails, removing throw rugs Patient will wear eyeclasses and hearing aids if needed.

Client Education -Follow the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) immunization recommendations: -Immunizations against diptheria, tetanus, pertussis, varicella, seasonal influenza, herpes zoster, and pneumococcal infections. -Increase intake of vitamins D B12, E, folate, fiber, and calcium -Limit sodium, fat, refined sugar, and alcohol intake -Promote physical activity

Nursing Interventions -Make sure food is acceptable, throughout the day and nutritional supplements between mealtimes. -Provide medication or address other physical needs before meals so the client is comfortable -Promote physical activity -To improve self-concept and alleviate social isolation, use: therapeutic communication, touch, reality orientation, validation therapy, reminiscence therapy -Education of assistive devices
