From a young age men are taught what “being a man” is and are told some things are off limits. Pressure to not show any non male traits.

Men appearing feminine aren’t the part of the greater dominant group. Social inequality in how men are expected to behave, how men are treated when they aren’t traditional.

Thinking like a Symbolic Shared activities described like scouting and then joining the navy. Straight men wouldn’t say that men are attractive, but women don’t have that kind of issue.

Masculinity concept is why men have such a high suicide rate. They can’t talk about anything they have to have a persona. Male mental health is not treated enough, not accepted enough. ●

● Which of the three major theories did you find most applicable to the podcast episode? Explain using specific vocabulary. Conflict, I think. Some traditional “male” positions are choices are connected to high earnings and the power and privilege that can go along with that. There can be an inequality with how men that don’t fit that particular idea of others are treated and viewed.



What was the social issue being discussed? Why is this type of social science research important for society?

I think it is gender inequality. When people talk about that they are usually talking about inequality towards women. In this case it’s inequality towards men who want to make different choices than what might be typically considered male. Also how men are limiting their own choices based on these traditional views. It is very important that this continues to be a topic because the quality of life for men can be impacted by these issue....
