Mental toughness is one of those vital intangibles that no successful athlete can do without. It is about being able to translate preparation to performance, and it’s a skill that needs constant development. So, what’s the best way to develop it? In this podcast, Youth Sports Psychology Consultant J ames Leath is on the hot seat to answer all your questions about mental toughness.

Directions: You will hit play and listen to the podcast. Make sure that you preread the questions before listening. As you follow along – you can pause the podcast to answer the following questions.

1. What is mental toughness? Also, include what mental toughness is not. Not being able to be your best no matter what. 2. Is this a coaching flaw? Why or why not? It isn't a coaching problem, it's more a mental prep flaw. 3. What is the right age to teach mental toughness and where does it start? & what happens if emotional maturity is left unchecked? It starts at home, a child who hasn't been challenged emotionally they have a victim mentality. 3 or 4 is the good age to start teaching this. 4. How do we model our behaviors as parents? By their actions, yelling at the ref, actions like this. 5. Your thoughts about the description and the coaches response to throwing a bat in anger. I think kids copy everything that other people do, so when you Cuss and get aggressive, kids think that its okay. 6. Should we have our athletes model their behavior after other athlete’s behaviors? Lebron James, Hector Sanchez, What is the responsibility of professional athlete, knowing that young people are watching? Do you agree that athletes influence young kids. I think it depends on who your child is looking up to. James talks about Lebron James in the podcast and I think that he is a good role and he has to keep a good mindset and present himself well . I do think that athletes influence young kids 7. Social media and college recruiting…the negative effects. Does it make you pause knowing that they are looking at everything you post? It does make me pause because social media represents you nowadays. 8. Incoming freshman not allowed on social media should be a clue that we have a problem. He makes a point that we (the student) are creating our own criminal record.

9. How do you get a player to look at the positives versus the negatives? Coaches/players/parents/ - why a confidence journal? It reminds you're not as bad as you think. What is the best way to help a child that is their own worst critic? look back at past success Adversity and youth sports – how do we ruin that as coaches and parents? How does that ruin it for the future of the athlete? They're given unrealistic circumstances. they think that they are entitled to everything 10 How do we twist parenting and winning? What is a direct reflection of your parenting? Just because your kid wins doesnt mean youre a good parent. If your kid is coachable that means you're a good parent. 11 What is the progression one can use to help shape mental toughness? Success vs non-successful athletes – humans? the ability to deal adversity, it's never too early to tell a kid how important hard work is. 12 When should a child start playing competitively – with goal setting, imagery, sport iq? Why – lifestyle commitment? after 5-6 grade 13 What about that $400 glove for the nine year old? – explain why that is a fail… the 9 year old thinks that the glove is doing all the work 14 The opposite of gratefulness is entitlement ________________

15 Are there ways to implement mental toughness and practical training in practice? Explain, he gives a lot of details. it's your job to critique yourself. 16 What are good visualization techniques athletes can use pregame?
