Biology Podcast Review...

Description

Carbon One of the biggest mysteries in biology is how old are we. Our cells are from different ages and areas. And it all started with the Bomb pulse in 2002. During 1940 and 1950 the world tested lots of atomic bombs to future wars. The bombs were tested in the ocean, air, and land. During the Cold War era 1945 to 1963 there were over 400 atomic tests. Every detonation of an atomic bomb would shoot of a bunch of radioactive elements up into the atmosphere it sends up a bunch of neutrons which crashes into nitrogen then creates a chemical reaction and the product of the chemical reaction is C 14 none as carbon 14 which is a very special type of carbon. Meanwhile all the bad radioactive particles start falling from the atmosphere to ground on earth, but C14 tends not fall from the atmosphere instead it just floats around. So, over a period of time the wind currents carried C14 from test sites of the atomic bombs which then C14 spreader all over our planet that we live on today.

Eventually our plants absorb c14 then the animals eat the plants the new as humans eat the animals or the plants now, we have Carbon 14 in us it has an effect on our cells which takes us to cell dating. We have atomic age within us because C14 hangs out in the air for years and years. We have scientist that are currently measuring the atmosphere to measure the amount Of C14 is up there each year overtime scientists can see cell dating which they can date back to reach and fully determine our real age and makes sense because were all made up of cells and cells are what controls our age and growth so this whole atomic age relates to our cells which can be known as carbon dating. Bomb Pulse: A dating forensic tool. “Traditionally, radio carbon dating has been considered to be an archeological tool rather than a forensic one.” “Radio carbon -14 is produced naturally in the atmosphere by cosmic ray interactions with nitrogen. “the radioactive decay of carbon 14 is minimal within the time periods of interest in medical forensic cases and applicable for samples over 300 years of age.” – “Bomb Pulse” Pulse Forensics, Lawrence Livermore National Labatory

Radiocarbon dating: “is a method that provides objective age estimates for carbon-based materials that originated from living organisms. An age could be estimated by measuring the amount of carbon-14 present in the sample and comparing this against an internationally used reference standard.”- “What Is Carbon-14 (14C) Dating? Carbon Dating Definition.” Carbon Dating Service, AMS Miami - Beta Analytic, 6 Sept. 2019.

Our current course content can definitely relate to the podcast because they both tie into evolution of biology for example human cells have changed in characteristics over several generations because of the Carbon 14 from the atomic bombing our cells have atomic age which goes back to cell dating. And as we learned in our Biology class Cells is what makes us who we are today, and animals and human cells are changing overtime This podcast definitely adds new information to the topic that is not found in my text book which is carbon dating. Carbon dating has a big impact on biology course. All living organism had dealt with carbon dating

For example, a corn plant absorbs carbon during photosynthesis, a turkey consumes carbon when it eats the corn. Carbon is absorbed into all its tissue, including its bones. When a turkey is butchered as soon as the turkey dies, the carbon it absorbed during its whole lifetime begins to decay which releases radio active carbon 14 from all its tissues and organs including their bones then archaeologists takes the turkey remaining’s to the radioactive laboratory which measures how much C14 is left to determine when the turkey died which is very fascinating. And then humans buy and consume the turkey, so humans now have Carbon 14 in them, and it keeps going down to further generations mean while humans and animal cells have been changing through decades. The information in the podcast I found it very relevant to me because my cells could possibly be younger or older than my birth age depending on the atomic age during that time when my cells first received C-14. The amount of C-14 in the atmosphere is directly reflected in my cells and everyone else’s which is cool. If Carbon 14

increased within the atmosphere each year the C 14 in our cells will continue to increase as well....
