Part 1: Realism and Impressionism In the first table of the worksheet, complete the following: 1. 2. 3.

Review the lists of characteristics of Realism and Impressionism. For each era, identify an artifact that depicts one of the characteristics listed. Explain which characteristic you think it represents, and why.

Realism Characteristics: 1. Depiction of the ordinary 2. Real-life situations 3. Shift from the ideal to the real

Realism Artifact

“Jewess with oranges” by Aleksander Gierymski

Characteristic That Realism Artifact Represents (Explain Your Reasoning) The painting shows a Jewish shopkeeper in Warsaw during world war II. I believe that Aleksander Gierymski wanted to show the awful reality of war, if we take a closer look at the woman’s face, we can see that she has wrinkles, I think that they are meant to represent the feeling of helplessness and sadness of the Polish people at the time.

Impressionism Characteristics: 1. The play of light in the present moment 2. Immediacy, spontaneity 3. Short, staccato brushstrokes in art

Impressionism Artifact

“Boulevard des Caupucines” by Claude Monet

Characteristic That Impressionism Artifact Represents (Explain Your Reasoning) Is an oil on canvas showing the street scene of the famous Paris boulevard. In this painting we can see what seems to be a busy cold evening in the French capital. When looking at this painting I imagine how living in Paris during the 1800s was like, which I believe was Monet’s purpose.

Part 2: The Modern World In the second table, address the following: 1. In the first column, identify creators from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries who you think made important contributions to art and culture in the form of humanities artifacts that impacted society. 2. In the second column, identify one of the artifacts they created. 3. In the third column, identify the medium of the artifact. Mediums can include dance, literature, sculpture, visual arts, architecture, music, performance, and more. 4. In the fourth column, explain why you believe the creator felt the need to express their ideas. For example, if one of the people you chose was John Lennon, you could identify one of his songs and discuss how the song relates to examples of his social activism.

Person Twentieth Century: Edwin Starr

Artifact Created “War”

Medium Music

Twenty-first Century: Green Day

American Idiot

Music

Need to Express Edwin Starr wanted to express his disapproval of the Vietnam war. This song is a criticism to the Bush administration and the war in Iraq.

Part 3: Short Answer In one to two paragraphs, answer the following questions:  

What differences do you notice between the artifacts from each era? Based on what you have learned in this module, what factors do you think caused these differences?

Realists were trying to tell a story focusing on details and depicting the ordinary, while impressionists wanted to describe the world where they were living by capturing every aspect of nature. I think that during the 20th and 21st century people don’t really appreciate paintings as much as others did in the past, because thanks to technology we can now capture anything we want with the use of a camera. Instead, music has become our current form of art, allowing artists to express themselves and making expressionism our artistic style....
