II. Body A. What is Social media? the background of social media spans as far as the early 2000s and has evolved immensely. 1. Social Media is basically known as any digital tool that allows users to create and share content with the public. 2. The first recognizable social media site was created in 1997 and it is called Six degrees. It enabled users to upload profiles and make friends with other users. 3. According to our world in data website, MySpace is the first social media site to reach a million monthly active users in 2004. But over the decade Facebook has dominated the social media platform with about 2.3 billion users making it the most popular social media platform. Among other social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and so on B. The immense use of social media leads to the conversation of the pros and cons that associate it.

1. One of the pros of social media will be the ability to connect to people all over the world and maintain relationships with friends, then a con of social media will be how it can enable cyberbullying. 2. Another pro would be that it makes it easy to access information and enables the ability to spread information. The con would be that it can be used to manipulate public opinion and promote social division. 3. My third pro would be that it allows people to express themselves and increase self-esteem, the con in this situation is that it increases the exposure of fake lifestyle and pressures individuals to look “perfect” and have “perfect” lifestyles in order to feel among. C. Social media affects our lifestyle, mental health, and sometimes our view on life, these are research findings to help understand its role. 1. According to an article by the Centre for mental health UK, the growth of social media has established an entirely new medium of human interaction, social media currently having about 3 billion active users, these statistics are proof that it has become an integral part of our lives. A wide variety of studies and experiments show that 5% of young people are affected by social media addiction and it was recently described as being potentially more addictive than alcohol and cigarettes. 2. In 2018, Alice G. Walton mentioned in a Forbes’s article that limiting social media to 30 minutes per day can result in a significant reduction in loneliness.

3. In an article by M. Anderson and J. Jiang, the statistics showed that teens feel the influence of social media is rather positive than negative, it included that teens feel more connected, supported, authentic, confident and even out-going, but yet it still makes teens feel overwhelmed to look good in order to attain likes and followings. III. Conclusion A. In conclusion, social media is a powerful tool that can affect one’s life either positively or negatively depending on how it is used and reacted upon. Eric Qualman said “We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media. The question is how well we do it.” Final Summary A. 1. Firstly, I informed you about what social media is, gave examples of some platforms, and talked about the background. 2. Secondly, I listed a few pros and cons associated with social media use. 3.
