As you can see here, this is a screenshot from a video that went viral on 2016, where an old woman was abused by her caretaker at old folks’ home in Malacca. By just looking at this picture, we can actually feel the pain that this woman had been through, the feeling of being discriminate and knowing that she is too weak to fight back. World Health Organization (WHO) stated that 1 in 6 people of the age 60 years and above experienced some form of abuse during the past year and it is expected to increase due to rise in global population of this elder group. Recently, according to The Rakyat Post online, Bukit Aman’s Sexual, Women and Child Investigations Division reported that during Movement Control Order (MCO) in our country, parental abuse by adult children shows an increase in the number of cases. The cases reported were classified as financial abuse since the perpetrators start abusing their parents due to financial problem. Adult abuse is an intentional act or failure to act that causes a risk of harm to an older person, either physically or mentally. Most of us didn’t know that adult abuse can happen in many ways and can be committed by anyone.

(Transition: So, to get things clearer, let us take a look at the graph regarding types of elder abuse)

I.

BODY The first graph shows the types of adult abuse that are commonly experienced by the elderly according to National Centre of Elder Abuse (NCEA) A. The most common type of abuse is Neglect or abandonment

B. C.

D.

E.

It took more than half of the pie chart with 58.5%, while the second highest type of abuse which is Physical only recorded 15.7% The difference between these two types of abuse is neglect happened when the elderly is being desert by the responsible people such as children or caretaker, for example not providing shelter, foods or medical attention. Physical abuse is more to any sort of physical force such as hitting, kicking or shoving that could result in physical injuries. The other types of adult abuse that is commonly heard is financial abuse. As what I have mention before, financial abuse usually happened when the perpetrators are facing financial constraints. Lastly, the least types of abuse based on this pie chart are emotional abuse and sexual abuse.

(Transition: Now let’s move on to our next discussion regarding the perpetrators of adult abuse)

II.

The second graph shows the breakdown of confirmed perpetrators of adult abuse according to National Centre of Elder Abuse A. Perpetrators can either come from a family member or even outsider. B. However, this pie chart shows that family members are most likely to become the perpetrators. C. Adult children recorded the highest percentage compare to any other family members, which is 40% D. It is shown that spouse is the second highest perpetrators, with 15%, followed by the other family members such as grandchildren (9%), other relatives(8%) parents (6%) and sibling (6%) E. Based on this graph, 3% of the perpetrators are service provider. i. Although majority of the perpetrators are family members, we should not dismiss that adult abuse also happens in old folks’ home or nursing homes. ii. We can take the case that I have mentioned earlier in my speech as an example, where the woman was abused at the old folks’ home by her own caretaker.

CONCLUSION In conclusion,

Adult abuse can happen in many ways and can be committed by anyone. There are several things that we can actually do as a society to prevent adult abuse to happen. A. We should be more understanding of the challenges faced by the elderly. 1. According to a study done by Dr. Jaspal Kaur from UiTM Shah Alam, most people have that negative view towards older people. They look at them as “mentally and physically weak, stubborn, out-of-date, unable to learn, seriously unhealthy and all in all a burden to society”. 2. This kind of perception or mindset need to be change immediately in order to prevent adult abuse to happen. 3. We need to try our best to understand their challenges and start providing supports that are needed by them. We are facing a situation where more people are getting older and less babies are being born, resulting in rapid growth of elder population. With that in mind, we need to be more serious and start putting more efforts in tackling elder people.
