Hallie Jamison - Speech One Skeleton Outline for Informative Speech General Purpose: To Inform Specific Purpose: To inform a class of college students that music education is beneficial and essential to receiving a modern education. Thesis: I want to pursue music education as a career because I believe that it is an important part of receiving a complete and total education, I believe that it helps people lead less stressful, happier lives, and I am passionate about teaching and music. Introduction I. Attention Getter: My dad is a special education teacher in my hometown and every school year throughout middle school and high school I volunteered to work with his special needs students to get them involved in music courses. Through teaching and involving special needs students in music, I was able to witness students transform their grumpy demeanors into enthusiastic and energetic attitudes. II. Motivation/Relevance: Countless studies and research efforts have shown time and time again that music can have immense positive effects on people. III. Credibility: I have witnessed these positive effects first hand through working with special needs students. IV. Preview: I want to stress the importance of music education by explaining how it… V. Music is an essential part of receiving a complete and total education. A. Studies and research efforts have shown that students involved in music courses tend to grasp concepts in their math, science, and language courses quicker and more completely than students who are not involved in music. B. In one study conducted by Katharine Smithrim and Rena Upitis, it is stated that students who were involved in music and art courses met higher learning standards in their non-arts courses and had more positive attitudes towards attending school. C. I think we can all agree that the world needs individuals who are intelligent and confident in that intelligence. I believe that music education can fulfill this need because it is directly connected to traits of intelligence and confidence. Transition: In addition to helping individuals become more intelligent, I believe that music involvement helps people become happier and less stressed. II. Involvement in music helps people to lead happier and less stressful lives. A. Music has been linked to helping the brain release more dopamine which is a common neurotransmitter in the brain that is associated with feelings of happiness and joy. B. Stress is known to be a major cause of various health issues ranging from serious heart attacks to less intense illnesses such as headaches and insomnia. One research group from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts found that involvement in music has been proven to decrease stress by impacting our psychobiological stress system in a positive way. Music educators can aid in the increased health of people within our society by involving students in various music based courses such as band, choir, guitar lessons, and other similar classes.

Transition: I have personally witnessed the increased health of students who have actively participated in music education courses. III. I want to become a music educator because I am passionate about helping people. A. During my time volunteering with my dad’s special needs students, I was able to help students who were non-verbal begin to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and emotions through music and sound. B. I was also able to help students become excited about learning. C. Witnessing the growth and excitement of these students and knowing that I played a role in their small victories, is what has inspired me to want to educate and help others. Conclusion 1.
