Informative Speech Outline

Communications 101 02 November 2018

General purpose: To inform. Specific purpose: To inform the audience on the requirements of becoming a police officer, the qualities a police officer must possess, and the rewards of being a police officer.

I.

Introduction A. Imagine your life without authority. You might be just fine without it, but we can all imagine how other people can abuse that freedom. This is exactly where a police officer comes in hand. B. Many of you can say you have received help from a police officer, whether they are ununiformed, detectives, state police and highway patrol, fish and game wardens, transit and railroad officers, sheriffs, or special jurisdiction police. C. Being a communications and psychology major, I want to work with and help people.I have spent countless hour reading victim stories and spent so much time with abused children that I feel the need to protect them. I have researched law enforcement and interviewed retired PD Gerald Lachere.

D. Today we are going to talk about the requirements of becoming a police officer, the qualities one must possess to be a great officer, and the rewards of working in the field. II.

Body A.

Becoming a police officer is hard. 1. There’s an entry exam that includes grammar, math, and logic (2018 Law Enforcement Entrance Exam, 2018). a) More specifically, the entry exam includes memory and facial recognition, spatial orientation, situational scenarios and reasoning, reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and spelling, basic math and problem solving  (Ibid.).  b) The minimum passing score required is 7 0-80% (Ibid.). 2. There’s a physical test called the PAT that tests endurance, strength, and flexibility (Ibid.). a) The test looks easy and sounds easy, but it’s a 6 minute test where one must complete an obstacle course, move onto the push-pull machine, participate in controlled falls, and finish with the dummy drag station. (1) The recovery takes about 45 minutes afterwards. b) 50% of people are projected to fail their first try (Physical Abilities test, 2018). 3. There’s a psychological test that taps into interests,  attitudes, preferences.

a) The goal of the test is to see if you can handle the mental tasks an officer has to deal with (2018 Law Enforcement Entrance Exam). b) 2% of applicants will have made it this far (Pre-employment Psychological Screening for Cops, 2018). Now that we’ve talked about becoming a police officer, we will talk about qualities an officer must possess. B. A good police officer must possess several qualities. A few we will discuss are empathy and flexibility. 1. The most important quality, and hardest to maintain, is empathy. a) According to Gerald Lachere, empathy can be used in a couple very different ways. (1) Empathy can be used in an interrogation. For example, a way Lachere used empathy to get a suspect to open up about a crime was by asking them if they’d care for a cigarette. Unknowing to the suspect was Lachere had every brand of cigarette in his desk drawer. (2) Empathy can be used with a victim to comfort them, especially after something very tough to go through has happened. 2. You must be quick on your toes, both physically and mentally. a) This is because field training has such a large quantity of information to learn in just three short months.

(1) This training is very drill-sergeant-like. (2) 63.5% of agencies reported that they have a field training program (Field Training for Police Officers, 1987). Now that we’ve talked about the qualities an officer must possess, we will learn about the rewards of this field. C.

Working in the police force has its rewards. 1. The salaries are stable and supportive. a) Starting wage is about $45,000 a year, but after moving up in ranks and being promoted, you could make $75,000 or more a year (Great Reasons to Be a Police Officer, 2018) . 2. Due to the rigors of the job, law enforcement officers are often rewarded retirement much earlier than the average person. a) The average person in the United States will retire at 6 5 (The Average Retirement Age in Every State, 2018). The average age for retirement from law enforcement is 45 years old (Police  Officer Retirement: The Beginning of a Long Life, 1987).

III.

Conclusion A. In conclusion, we have first learned about the requirements of becoming a police officer, second we have discussed the qualities a police officer should possess, and third we learned the rewards of being a police officer. B. So next time you’re out and about and see a police officer, think about all that they did to be in a position that they are in now.
